What do you walk with to protect from other dogs?

Carry an electric cattle prod for protection from dogs.

Guns are for protection from any threat, not just people or dogs.

True but they don't work so well for dogs when out walking, anyone who knows anythinga bout firearms would know that.

Better than nothing, but a cattle prod is much safer, no riccochet or collateral risks, no dumb laws against them, etc. etc.

Anyone who knows anything about firearms know exactly how they function and what they can/can't do. At the end of the day a firearm will be the best and most lethal solution to crazed large dog attack (especially a pit or a group of strays). Are there other things that "might" work, possibly... but I stand by my original statement

Ridiculous. "Never use cannon to kill mosquito"

Enjoy your lawsuit for in town discharge of a firearm, neglegent discharge, ricochets, felony assault, neglegence resulting in death etc. when all you had to do was not be a little puss and shoo the dog away.

Shooting is for people defense.

Pick the best tool for the job. You aren't doing that.

You can tell who knows guns and who shouldn't own guns. Carrying a gun for defense against the highly unlikely scenario of a pack of wild dogs attacking is ridiculously irresponsible and paranoid to a point where someone really ought to seek professional assistance for their dog phobia

I wonder how many people arguing against firearms here actually own or carry one, I'd guess probably most don't ...

I would open carry a gun.

Not lawful for handgun (even with a permit) or long gun in DC.

Not lawful for a handgun (even with a permit) or prudent for a long gun in MD.

YMMV in VA.

so conceal carry, legal in MD and DC...

Lawful subject to various and sundry restricted places, with a permit obtained only after spending significant time and money, with more time and money for each all-to-brief renewal, and not available to everyone.

And then the question of effective marksmanship against a fast-moving aggressive animal presumably physically engaged with one’s own animal that would also be moving rapidly.

Partially nonsensical comment - concealed carry is available to all those who are legally able to carry, there are no more restriction to who may obtain a permit. A firearm will still be the most effective way to stop an attack from a large aggressive dog. People mention using knives, you can can shoot very close range and be fairly accurate and its safer then getting close with a knife. It's all about how one feels about this - its a personal choice, but if I was genuinely concerned about being attacked by a large and aggresive animal, this would be my choice.

So a large dog rushes up to you with a scary sounding bark, bark, bark and stops about 4 feet away. He continues to snarl and bark and carry on from about that spot while the owner rushes up to get him. Would you actually draw your firearm and shoot the barking dog?

When I lived in California, three pit bulls escaped from their yard. The police were called, they blasted messages to "stay in your house" throughout the neighborhood. Then they shot the dogs. I didn't come out so I don't know what specifically happening but apparently they did try to go near someone, though no one was injured to my knowledge.

I'd definitely call animal control right away on a loose or unleashed dog, and take a picture and document something scary. Get rid of the bad eggs, that will probably help a lot.

I'm former military, so you're wrong on at least one count.

In this case, they are the ones who likely do carry firearms and know how to use them, and the limitations of using a firearm for a barking dog running up to you.

That never ends well for dogs. :( Cops are almost always scared wimps and will draw and shoot anything they think is a threat, such as a little old lady, poodles, even babies that stare at them too long.

The police are not your friends.

According to the experts who have studied & written articles on this topic, pepper spray & bear spray are ineffective at stopping an attacking pit bull. Any knife would have to be very long to be effective.

As ridiculous and as dangerous as it sounds, the experts have determined that the most effective way to help a victim (dog, human, or other animal) from a pit bull attack is to pull the pit bull's tail with great force. Not kidding. Of course, the attacking pit bull will then focus its aggression on the tail puller.

When neighbors adopted a full grown pit bull, their friends refused to come into their house. As I am a well known dog lover, the couple confided in me how foolish their friends were being to which I replied that the only way that I would enter their home was with a cocked 45 calibre hand-gun (although I am not a gun owner).

The couple's two pit bulls got loose one day and went on a killing spree of about 30 animals including a number of beautiful llamas. The couple quickly sold their home & fled back to an adjoining state. The couple's daughter headed the pit bull adoption/rehoming center in our city.

As a life-long dog owner with multiple dogs, I refuse to walk my dogs in public and I especially avoid dog parks due to aggressive dogs and diseases (especially eye diseases). I live on a full acre with strong fences so that my lab mix rescues can run & play without the danger of another dog coming onto our property.

I know pit bull owners who get off on watching their pit bulls attack other dogs.

Troll. ChatGPT probably cooked up this story

And threw in a mauled llama.

Here’s one example of pits attacking neighbor’s farm animals. Looking for more

There's a known anti-pit troll on this forum who will derail any thread with anti-pit nonsense. And yes, it's counterproductive. Everybody hates that poster because they keep us from having sane discussions. Totally mental.

Fyi ton of people who dont like pits. https://www.reddit.com/r/BanPitBulls/

Stupid people do tend to flock together. Sheeple in an echo chamber. Doesn't make them right, definitely doesn't make them smart. Certainly doesn't justify the anti-pit wacko here's obsession/compulsion to shitpost nonsense on any thread about any kind of dog ever. As you've pointed out, there's a place for that. Go there.

Basd off this pet forum, there are many people who reasonably are concerned about pit, and then this poster who shows up on every dog thread.

The profanity and insults give it away.

Meh. a lot of people swear. There is one, neurotic poster who is paranoid about pit bulls but also obsessed with them. They turn any thread they can into a rant about pit bulls, and also their hatred for people who "defend them". They lump any comments that don't match their hate into one strawman and call "her" the pro-pitbull lady. It's one persons neurosis though. Typical DCUM troll.

You do know you repeatedly quote and insult multiple people, claiming they are one person?

All of the people you insult have different writing styles. You have one distinct insult ridden style.

You’re completely tone deaf. People call the cops on pit bulls because they want them shot. If you want to keep killing machines around your own family then do it on your own property. Once they are on public property, we sane people want them shot and killed.

Move where there are strong rules against dangerous breeds and unleashed dogs.

I carry bear mace, but we have actual bears and bobcats that wander where I live. Granted, the one time a bear did cross our path it jumped and then scampered away.

I've been bit once by a dog, a big ol Newfie. Actually sad situation because it turned out the dog was being abused and I was the second person it bit so it had to be put down. Apparently when animal control came, it bit one of them too. I'm a firm believer in the fact that there are no "bad dogs". There are bad owners that cause behavioral problems and the dogs suffer as a result.
