I am confused by the comments about UVA as a school with a football culture. Of the schools playing major college football, UVA has the reputation of lacking a football culture. I would say Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Duke have more of a football culture than UVA. They are obviously no VaTech and JMU might have more of a football culture than UVA.

UVa’s hard core drinking culture revolves around Greek Life in a very exclusionary manner. VT and JMU’s drinking is more friendly and inclusive through football. UVa’s mediocre at best football team is out of sight and out of mind.

NP. You people are ridiculous. What is a “hard drinking school”?? Every university has parties, drinking, etc. except perhaps those that are very religious. MIT is known for their wild frat parties, for crying out loud! If your kid is in college they will either be drinking or around people who drink.

My DD will be a “3rd Year” this fall (FCPS grad- middle income family - by NOVA standards). She has enjoyed her time there so far. She joined a sorority, volunteers, plays intramural sports, and did study abroad. Yes, she goes to frat parties, and there is drinking. I am not sure how much of the school culture really revolves around drinking though. Drinking is quite common at most universities, isn’t it?
