Vance the Fake Catholic

People who pretend to police membership in a religion based on political beliefs (which I have seen on the right and left) are narrow-minded. Almost two thirds of American Catholics voted for Trump in 2024. Are they all "fake Catholics" too?

Seems like Catholic Trump voters have been rebuked by the Vatican.

One wonders if PP voted for Trump and is regretting it now that there is an American Pope who seems to be anti-Trump.

PP's stats are fake too -- the highest number I've seen is 55% [https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/04/30/voters-views-of-trump-and-biden-differ-sharply-by-religion/] and much of that was due to a shift among Hispanic voters in poor areas who believe his lies about the economy. To be fair, Pope Francis just said either choice is flawed and imperfect and to vote your conscience. He didn't weigh in either way. Nor will Leo. It's not really appropriate for a Pope to try to influence elections or for US Bishops to. The ones who supported Trump were inappropriate.

+1
Also a couple of tweets from then Prevost before he was pope that consisted of retweets from someone else do not amount to a rebuke by the Vatican.

Vance? It's clear as day that he's been a vine looking for support all his life. He needs to feel part of something bigger than himself, and the Catholic Church is indeed a very powerful, long-lived, storied, somewhat mysterious, secretive and glitzy organization. He even had to build up to it. But I don't think he has a principled or God-fearing bone in his body, that man. I'd put Lindsay Graham in that category as well. Those two are deeply insecure people who due to their childhood upbringings, were born to be attracted to the schoolyard bullies. Their jobs in life are Attack Dog and Greek Chorus. They're not leaders.

Vance enlisted in the USMC straight out of high school in the middle of the GWOT and at the beginning of OIF. That singular act alone exceeds anything Biden, Pelosi, Romney or Pence have done. That’s before we even get into the actual character of the four role models you reference.

Really? Working in public affairs / media relations and getting educational benefits that changed the trajectory of his life is a “singular act” that exceeds “anything” that several lifelong public servants have done? Lol Interesting values here. It’s probably wise not to bring up “actual character”. When I watched Vance attack Zelenskyy for the benefit of TASS and other media, I saw everything I needed to know.

Agreed. Vance is smarmy douche bag who only cares about appearances. He is one of the people arguing that empathy is bad. He's a total phony.

Okay, this is making some sense to me. JD Vance obviously does not actually believe what Catholics believe, and his choice of Catholicism as an adult did not make sense to me. I also know several people who have joined, as adults, hierarchical churches whose beliefs they don't really share. I couldn't understand why, but the unsupported vine theory seems to apply to all of them.
