FWIW, we don't know the circumstances at all. She was obviously very private about her personal life. In her DOJ bio there is no mention of where she grew up or her family. Check out other government bios. It is generally part of the information. All that i could find is that she was born in California and graduated from University of Richmond (a very pricey school) and went to William and Mary for her law degree.
She sounds like a very good person who worked very hard. But, she appears to have been very private on her personal details.--That was her right. I suspect she would not appreciate some of the comments we have read here.
Even in WAPO today there was nothing about her survivors. That is just odd.
