| Wow. In our FCPS, the advanced students would take World History 1 Honors in 9th, AP World in 10th, APUSH in 11th, and AP Gov in 12th. |
Yeah, mcps does it differently than Fairfax and Howard. |
|
I think both the BCC track with APUSH in 10th, and FCPS with world, AP World, APUSH in 11th, and AP gov in 12th are better than Blair.
Doing world history, then AP World History, really solidifies history, then the hardest AP in 11th, and a slightly easier senior year. |
| OP it is a year long AP class in MCPS but in the rest of the country it is a 1 semester course normally taken before or after Economics AP. It will be an easy A for your kid and if they practice the AP exams they are likely to get a 5 (or a 4) which is excellent. They can also opt not to take the exam (you'll need to check this). |
No, MCPS is not unique. Lots of places offer AP US Government and Politics as a year long course. |
I did not say it was unique, but it is not the majority. Most people in MCPS do not know this. |
You said "in the rest of the country, it is a 1 semester course." That sounds like you think/thought that it was pretty universal. |
| Do MCPS students take World in 10th and US History in 11th? |
| My son in MCPS took AP gov 9th, APUSH 10th, AP world 11th. This is typical at his school. |
It depends on the school. My child is at Blair, so took APUSH in 9th, AP NSL in 10th, AP World in 11th, and will likely choose AP African American History next year, but could also choose AP European History. |
Most take World in 11th. US is either 9th or 10th. |
| What History classes did your kid take in 9th? In 10th? 11th? And 12th grades? |
| With the new grading policy, how has your kid done in AP Government this past year? What grade are they in? |
| Definitely take gov. Its easy for my child and they will be behind others if they don't take it. This is from a BCC parent. |
For registration at BCC, counselor emphasized if you choose AP Gov in 9th , you are also committing to AP US hist in 10th. It’s a “2 year commitment”. Not saying they wouldn’t make an exception and let a struggling student drop down to “honors” in 10th, this is just how they presented at the registration meeting, as a package deal. |
