How often do you *actually* get an oil change, and how old is your car?

My brother is an intructor at a technical college and he changes his own vehicles every 3k miles. An ounce of prevention and all that, plus he can judge from the condition of the oil if there is something new going on.

He also says to pick a particular oil and stick with it through the life of the vehicle. Don’t mix them, because they can interact and get sludg-y impacting the life of the engine.

It also matters more if you keep your vehicles long term. My truck is 15 years old and I don’t plan to replace it any time soon. It is much more important that it has been cared for well its entire lifetime than a car you trade in every 3-5 years.

So in short, he agrees with wrench guy much more than dealers, who are in the business of selling you a new car as often as possible.

2016 Ford Explorer which I average about 6800 miles per year. I only use full synthetic oil, which I change at 5000 miles. So every about every 7 months I get my oil changed.
