Enlighten us please. Because in VA, the only comparable offer is from VCU. There are a small number of schools offering full or close to full rides for NMSF/NMF Alabama is unique in the amount and length - it covers everything for 5 years |
The campus is one of the most beautiful and easily walkable I've seen, and most kids just live right there off of University Blvd so they do not take in ALL of Alabama. I found there was a pretty good balance of liberal/conservative in the staff and students but it is a HUGE student population with little guidance so you'd better be able to navigate the system independently. Counselors can rotate easily (unless you get lucky and latch onto one) and the sheer size of the student body coupled with football and partying is exhausting. The nursing school is top rated in the country as is the PR/Marketing curriculum and the students who went onto law school whom I knew went to some pretty prestigious schools after getting a basically full paid four year degree at Alabama. Lots of kids from up North and the West Coast have started to drift into the population, not a huge majority but they are certainly coming there I think mostly for the merit. |

DD with 1580 NMF applied to Pitt CS got $5000 only, not worth it for OOS She got $5000 from UMD which is much better deal in-state |
Exactly. OP needs guidance... UMD would be much better for her kid. Kid must go to a public HS with lousy college counselor. |
Yes...because they went to Hillbilly U down south. |
Name some others that give full rides for the same stats. |
DP. Looks like Texas Tech, Ole Miss, U of South Florida, Tulsa, Idaho, Maine, and New Mexico all offer full COA scholarships. Alabama is probably the most prominent. There are also a ton of colleges that will offer free tuition to NMSF students. It's a good reminder for high school students to crush the PSAT. It opens a lot of doors, particularly for those with high need. |
I know someone who sent their kid there. No debt and in med school. They also have had the happiest experience with nice kids. The southern kids are happy. I don’t know if it is the sun or they have parents who are not all about politics all day but you do you. No way I would want to send a kid to NYC now so hate away. |

Is Florida out as well as a college destination? Texas? What about colleges in towns that are red, including in otherwise blue or purple states. New York? Pennsylvania? North Carolina? Arizona? Ohio ?
Half the country is red (I am a democrat) This is ridiculous. Overwhelming majority of kids couldnt care less about politics and it isn’t a major topic for discussion. These are college campuses. |
Nobody understands this unless they experience it firsthand. My liberal kid who was raised in MoCo is thriving in Tuscaloosa. The student body is happier. Everyone seems to hit the gym as well as the library daily. Having visited many times, I can report that people in shops, restaurants, etc. are noticeably friendlier. My kid won’t stay down there after graduation, but I’m glad they left our blue bubble to experience living and working with people with a variety of viewpoints. ^^^ That’s a critical life skill ICYMI. |
As a Southerner, it's always weird to see people on DCUM treat us like we're the simple, happy island folk of some place they went on vacation. Some kids in the South are happy, some aren't, the same as anywhere else. We're just people, and we don't need either your fetishization or for you to send your kids here on some kind of field trip to see how the other half lives. |

Well said, it says a lot about them. Some of the posts on this thread are extremely arrogant, misguided, and offensive. |
| To the pp who thinks that's an assortment of mediocrity, you are a mediocre thinker. OP's kid is going to have her choice of full-rides in honors programs at these large state universities with some stellar professors and amazing research opportunities. She is now and will continue to be an amazing scholar. OP, I'm from AL and have many friends who graduated from there and they are mostly doctors, lawyers, business owners (one who sold his business in his early 40s for over $100 million), professors, teachers, etc. I was a NMSF and got a full ride but opted for a full ride from a top 25 private instead. |
OP here. Thank you - that is really nice to know. Could we possibly ask which privates offer full rides for these stats. Thank you |
