I find all these SLACS to be so similar

Colby was a very pleasant surprise for us. All the building going on is pretty impressive….and that athletic center….wow

I guess remote location and very hard to get into. Defies the logic.

I had some of the worries about small school, athlete/non-athlete split, etc. but all of the great things about the SLAC environment have proven to be true (and not the downsides). What makes me so happy, is that my kid and (the other kid she knew that went) are the happiest amongst their friend group from HS. Easy to get involved in activities, great professors, and most importantly just a great group of kids and the school fosters community (kids eat together, lots of school events, etc.). We looked at a lot of the SLACs and liked a number. Could not be happier with the choice that was made. Whether something is worth the tuition is a personal decision. From my perspective, totally worth the money.

tell me more about this. how does this happen - organically?
is your kid an athlete?
what types of activities is kid involved with on campus?

I think it's a mistake to generalize about these schools - it really depends on what the kid wants and where they think they will thrive. Many of my daughter's friends wanted larger schools - and I understand that. She wanted a small school, loves the rural location, and is having a wonderful time. Have your kid do some research into the academics and programs they might be interested in; visit some schools and see what they respond to. We visited SLACs she loved and others she really disliked; big schools and mediums schools; rural schools and urban schools. You learn a lot by touring.

How does Bucknell.compare to Haverford? Looking for a DC that possibly would be interested in engineering at Bucknell but not into the Greek scene or constant partying

+1. Absolutely!

wrong. Not even a top 10 lac for finance nor Wall Street. Just a typical college for people dumb enough to shell money for an irrelevant college with no career opportunities or intelligent students.

Thank you for your compelling, fact-driven analysis.

You can always make your own argument, but you can't so you have to insinuate bs.

You call name calling and gross over generalizations an argument? You are drunk clown who bumped their head. How’s that?

Whatever pp said, it’s not that far off the meter. Bucknell is way overrated.

Can you elaborate? Especially for a kid who may feel overwhelmed at a state school and wants to stay closer to the DMV than New England

You’d exclude Middlebury and Bowdoin?

LACs were much easier for me to see where my kid did and did not fit into Than universities. Almost every single one has a personality.

Middlebury for sure, Bowdoin may be!

So you are saying you can afford 90k but would only do it if the name were famous enough. Thing is, inability to get high value out of more than the top 4 USNWR LACs isn’t the flex you think. That says more about a dependence on name recognition than anything about the schools or fit. It instills way more confidence and ambition to assure a kid they will be fine if they do great work wherever they land, but, hey, you do you.

Bowdoin now has a lower admit rate than some WASP schools. Strange to not consider it a peer school.

Was that personality obvious when you visited or did you figure it out a different way?

My '25 kid had very specific criteria that made it easy to narrow to a short list. My '27 kid thinks he wants a SLAC and I think that will be more difficult.

It is really about one’s own DC and the “best fit” SLAC for them.

All the ones mentioned will meet all of OP’s criteria for some of their students. None will meet all of the criteria for all students. Choose Best Fit.
