I will never again rent an EV and I have no idea how people deal with this

The most obvious ones were taken and I drove around looking for more (which are unmarked) so again, unless you know a place you have no idea where they are located in a dark garage. I've wasted at least 4 hours at this point figuring stuff out.

No offense, nothing that you’re describing is that hard. I rented an EV once and these things weren’t that challenging. I now own an EV and it’s still not challenging.

Are you over the age of 60 and not good at using google maps? Or are you just not that bright?

Under 40 and went to MIT but thanks

You are a young techie and you can’t figure out how to use an EV? That’s very surprising.

What about an EV is tech related? This is literally an infrastructure issue

You allegedly went to MIT and can’t use technology (an iphone) that has been available for 16 years. None of what you are describing is that hard and most of it has nothing to do with an EV (eg a garage being poorly labeled).

NP, and I don't know why you are so hostile to OP. S/he said that the app only helps locate the location (a garage) but doesn't say where in the garage the charger is located, what kind of charger it is, etc. The person who said this is an infrastructure issue is correct. An EV as a rental only makes sense if you are in a city where you already know the location of the chargers, or if you are staying somewhere with guaranteed access. Otherwise you are at the mercy of bad infrastructure, unclear maps, and whether there are enough chargers for demand.

Hostile because this poster clearly has an agenda and is willfully ignorant and intellectually lazy. It’s not that hard to figure out. I did it without ever thinking about an EV before by renting one, not in a big city, by using an app. I now find chargers all the time using an app. It’s not that difficult for average intelligence adults, let alone MIT brainiacs.

If you use a Tesla the map and trip will adjust to include RV charging, just use Tesla they know what's up

He had a bad EV rental experience last time, so he planned ahead and checked out where the charging stations were. I kid you not, the first THREE charging stations he visited had all been removed. Yes, we are visiting oil country, but WTH!?

In unrelated news, the Mustang EV is wildly annoying. Too many beeps that can’t be turned off. We’re really looking at ways to reduce our carbon footprint, but EV rental is a bridge too far. I can see how it would be great if you had a charger in your garage.

Update: The FIFTH charger we tried was still there and operational.

Sorry OP, that stinks. We have 2 EV’s and I plan to drive them for the next 500k miles and never breathe in gasoline fumes at the gas station again. I hate renting ice cars because I am so used to EV’s. Hope you have a better experience if you ever try to rent an EV again.

I equate this to when people were stymied at driving a horseless carriage. They couldn’t handle the inconvenience of a machine that required cranking and fuel over a reliable horse that ate grass.

We were given a Tesla recently in a European country and didn't have a choice of another car. It was a pain given that we were going to a rural area and no one explained a darn thing to us about how to use it. It turned out fine, but we did have to drive about an hour away a couple times to charge; there were more local chargers but they didn't work (confirmed by others who have traveled to the area)

Those other chargers will work with a Tesla, but you need to use an adaptor (which should be provided in the car, but probably isn't because rental companies don't want to pay for them).

There were adaptors in the trunk that we tried, but the station didn't work. Again, this was confirmed by others who actually own Teslas and had the same issue at chargers in the area. We were lucky to find online an article about driving a Tesla in the area we visited, and the article named the one station within an hour or so that actually worked.

Until charging stations are as plentiful and fast as gas stations, this is a hard pass from us. Also, gasoline cars are way cheaper than their EV equivalents.

The car rentals companies offer no guidance on how to use them. No one wants to spend their vacation, or work time, for that matter figuring out chargers, adapters, different apps. Boondoggle.

There are way too many gas stations.

We own an EV and love it. But it works because we can plug it in at home each night.
I don't think I'd accept an EV as a rental car unless I knew we'd have a reliable charging mechanism where we were staying.

EVs are awesome, but the infrastructure isn't there for htem to be good rental cars right now.

The KIA had no map and only was compatible with an Apple phone for maps. Super annoying!

Great! There is always one nearby with no line.

Really? That would suck. Download "A Better Route Planner". That will show you chargers along your route.

I don’t know OP’s car brand, but mine (IV.4) will show ABRP on ApplePlay. I found ABRP frustrating, although maybe I didn’t spend enough time with it before I went back to PlugShare.

What about Rivian? I've seen 4 of them rolling around my neighborhood. And a Tesla truck. we fancy here.
