Ivy League Schools

Most Ivy League schools are quite pleasant places to go to school. Not too big, not too small and in nice locations with great professors.

Second, it does matter in terms of getting jobs. My DS went to Brown and I think it helped him stand out when he applied for jobs and get that first interview, which is the most important step in any job search. He noted that it opened doors.

Yup more than any Ivy this or that, many of them are a popular size and located near popular cities. And that also helps attract strong faculty. Sometimes it just isn’t that complicated.

Even if your child does not participate in this cult like behavior, too many employers will be afraid to hire them. No way I would invest the money in an ivy education anymore. Zero return on investment and too much risk of what the education will do to my children.

Doubt you are really an Ivy grad cause people would not curse their padigree unless something like their kids wasn't let in their alma mater.

dp but another ivy grad who wont send his kid there:
1) there was no cursing
2) its spelled pedigree
my kids are going overseas

It is hard to get into T15/ivy in the states when 50% of kids there have some sort of hook. For 99th %ile highly intelligent students who get shut out, Oxbridge or St Andrews is better than many lower ranked options in the states. Many private school and governors school kids shoot for abroad to have it as the better backup.

When you take a deep dive into the outcomes, and your kid has sights set on T14 law or a top md-phd or startup boosts, you can see that ivies/ivy+ do in fact give a boost and are significantly overrepresented within these outcomes. An education with that peer group is second to none. It was true in my day and is still true with my kids at their schools. It opens doors wide even for average kids who attend.

Anonymous wrote:All of the Ivies are great, but I think only Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Wharton are really differentiated and worthy of premium over a great state flagship.

For example, the merits of paying full tuition for Penn, Brown, Dartmouth or Cornell over in-state UVA is very ambiguous.

No worry. If you choose not to go to Penn, Brown, Dartmouth or Cornell, there will be thousands of kids happy to get the spots.

This. People rarely turn down an Ivy offer.

I suppose it may help him some way or other too. Too early to tell.

This. You win DCUM.

Except they are woke. Just admit you are looking for prestige on the cheap.

Yes, the best and brightest attend the Ivies.

I think Ivy outcomes are about to take a nose-dive. Students only admitted under test optional policies or because they checked certain “woke” boxes will tarnish the Ivy rep (see post above with Hamas-supporter requesting food delivery to protestors). Students engaging in antisemitism will be blacklisted. So if the “education” doesn’t seem top tier anymore and is, in fact, indoctrination and anti-American, I am hoping more families with means will opt out. Maybe this will force a correction in tuition. We can only hope!

Better education for less money. Pretty simple. Also, some countries offer automatic work visas for international graduates.

Sorry to complicate your shallow thinking, but only one Ivy is close to a city that is worth a crap (Boston). And that area is expensive even for senior faculty.

I think there are a lot of fake Ivy grads on this thread.

And sock puppets as well.

Indeed, it's weird.
