I think this is overly optimistic. It is rare for an UNHOOKED kid with a 3.8 to get into a T20. A kid with a 3.7 is unlikely to get in a T20-T25. |
| ^^^Depends on school they are coming from and the rigor…kids with 3.7 GPA at Big 3 are getting into Wash U, Emory and UChicago ED. |
| In terms of Wash U vs Emory, Emory appears to be more predictable based on past results. Wash U is working to redefine itself and is less predictable the last few years. The new chancellor is working to make it the "most equitable school" in the world and admissions is making unpredictable decisions. Took mediocre students from some private schools and rejected others from different schools. |
3.8 kids at these schools definitely are getting in to T11-25…. |
Which private hs do you have experience with? |
|
How did these private school 3.8s fare last week?
Are they also stuck in waitlist city? |
The top 3/5/7 local privates have GPA / grade -deflation- in a very consistent way. Some of the lower ranked privates might have grade inflation, especially the smaller or newer schools. |
Unhooked 3.8s will are probably on a bunch of T10-T25 waitlists, unless they went ED and got lucky. |
Yes. In DC at the top privates the greater problem has been grade deflation so students look consistently worse than the 4.0 hordes out of public schools. This forces colleges to engage in a within-school comparison of students that is weird/unfair. It also creates all the wrong dynamics within the school (between students etc). |
Yes, so very unfair for these disadvantaged students. |
Only ED. Not RD from what we are seeing at our private this year. Ok many kids applying to 20+ schools from the class and certain high stats kids didn’t get into their REA reaches so trickle down. 3.8 (private high school) sux for RD. We are struggling. Advice aim for schools ranked 20-30 or so in ED for best shot. |
so what is actually happening? Are their 3.8 kids getting shut out entirely from top 40 schools? i'm curious as this will be my kid next year. |
Getting into schools like UIUC, Northeastern, Wisconsin, Lehigh, Wake. Shutout RD anywhere T25. Some SLACs too. But ranked higher than 20. It’s brutal. Should have ED2 - NYU; Tufts; BC. Aim low for ED1 - Even with national awards and pointy ECs. The kids with 3.9+ are taking the RD spots. 3.8+ is no man’s land. Find schools with limited data in Scoir or naviance bc lots of kids don’t apply there. |
If they are lucky they are on WL. Lots of USC rejections. |
