How much TV exposure for infants?

Anonymous
My 7.5 mo watches some TV. It's not like we plop him in front of baby cartoons for hours a day or anything. Often he will be playing with his toys and we might want to watch something and we'll have it on in the same room. If I notice that he is watching it or zoning out, I'll either turn it off, or if DH is watching then I'll make sure Im playing with the baby so he's not really "watching" it. During the week we have little time with him after work so our TV watching is pretty much after bed, but like this weekend we had the olympics on while he was in the room, or sometimes if there is a soccer game on that the whole family is watching he'll be there with his toys while it is on.

My ped is on the side of no TV before 2, but she also told me that if I had to put DD in front of the TV for a little while -- like when I'm prepping dinner, or something -- it was okay. But she did say don't have her watch things like teletubbies, which is too sedate and isn't as good for their brain to see those simplistic sounds and images. I'm paraphrasing and not very well, I'm sure, but her point made sense. She also said that skyping is a better choice because it's more active.

Because those are clearly comparable.
