I actually liked 2 even better than one. Saw it Fri at AMC Gtown. |
OP of this thread and I finally got to see this today! It was great. Really gripping. I even indoctrinated my kids and it was fund to see their reactions to what was happening.
Again, completely visually stunning. Chalamet really lived up to the role. I thought he captured everything Paul was going through really well and at the end you understood why Paul made the choices he did, even when he didn't want to. That Giedi Prime arena fight scene was insane. Butler was great in that role. I think my two critiques are that I don't think Zendaya really lived up to the role of Chani and that I never want to hear Florence Pugh attempt an American accent again. I wanted to love Zendaya in this role and just couldn't get there. I don't think she and Chalamet had much chemistry and I also think the decision to not have her be the daughter of Liet Kynes was a mistake. but she did bring some great moments - the look she gave Chalamet when he tried to mansplain the sand stride was gold. I also thought Jessica seemed a little crazy, which I didn't remember from the books. |
I was SO excited for this release, but found Dune 2 disappointing and actually liked Part 1 better. The music/score is boring and at times annoying, the casting esp. Zendaya and Christopher Walkin is pretty bad, the love story is not believable because 1) they have zero chemistry and 2) Zendaya’s Chani is constantly questioning Paul and showing mistrust. Paul’s mother had a huge character shift from Part 1 to 2 and turned crazy and unlikeable. The story was rushed, and since Jessica was pregnant the entire time, are we to believe this all happened in less than 6-8 months?! Just learning to ride a sandstorm would probably take months.
The cinematography is beautiful, but overall, Dune 2 is a a case of too much gravy and not enough meat. |
Yeah it seemed sudden in the movie, like he was insisting he couldn’t go, then had another one of his visions, then decides to go. |
I think Chalamet did a great job, but agree that the love story falls flat. I haven't seen Zendaya in other things so I'm not sure if the problem is chemistry, or if she isn't that great of an actress. |
Just seen part 2. I liked part 1 better... . If I did not read the books, not sure if I would have been able to understand the story at all. Part one was done much better and in more detail. Part 2, like someone else said, covered a long period of time but Jessica still did not have her baby. And it was just so superficial. I cannot quite remember, was it the same in the book time wise? When was the sister born? |
Community and Marvel are nowhere in the same league. |
I'm new to Dune (only watched the Dune 1 remake) and still haven't seen Dune 2. But it sounds like I should carve out time and prepare for it to be slow. |
I think it's the script. They aren't really shown spending much time together in the movie. It's like "that's a thing that happened." |
NP. Community is streets ahead. |
I just watched with my Dune loving husband. I agree it’s very reminiscent of Star Wars. I really wish there was a Han Solo like character in the middle for comedic banter purposes. It’s just so ponderous and self-important.
I thought Timothee Chalamet was incredible. It’s rare to have an actor convincingly play a playful young boy and a bitter angry young man in the same series or movie. Most actors are too self-conscious to play up the little boy part. I thought he did it remarkably well. He reminded me of Christian Bale who was able to play both of these types of characters at different points in his career but never did so in one movie. Can you imagine watching Bale’s Laurie from Little Women morph into Batman? Would have been amazing. Never was captured in one project. Timothee Chalamet is doing this and I give him a ton of credit. It takes a lot of versatility, vulnerability, and impress command of body and voice. I loved Javier Bardem too. He was great. I liked that Zendaya’s Chani wasn’t a pushover. According to my husband who read the books and liked the 1980s movie - she wasn’t originally written with much of a backbone. I liked Zendaya’s version. Austin Butler was so creepy I almost couldn’t bear to watch him. Same for Stellan Skarsgard. Jason Mamoa and Josh Brolin were good but doing nothing new here. Oscar Isaak and Rebecca Ferguson were both very very good. She’s creepy. I’m over Florence Pugh. Don’t like her much. Christopher Walken was merely okay. Its was all about Timothee, Javier, and Zendaya for me. |
Have you ever seen Empire of the Sun? |
Ive never read dune or watched the old ones, but I did watch both of the new ones. I liked Pt 2 better than Pt 1, but maybe it helped that I "knew" the story from having watched pt 1 a bit? Anyways, I liked it. |
I have become weirdly obsessed with Dune 1 and 2, considering I never read the book. It's been a long time since I've gone in a theater to watch a movie, but for these 2, it was worth it. |
I've read the book a couple times and I actually preferred the movie ending. |
