Yes, definitely look at Macalester. Lovely school in a great location that I’ve never heard anything but positive things about. My kid got the top merit aid of 25K. Got into top choice so won’t be attending, but it would have been a strong contender.

Is this everyone else's experience also? Interested in hearing first hand accounts.

Macalester is my DC's #1 choice. The school's values closely align with my DC's. One knock on the student experience is that the cafeteria food is supposedly not great. My DC, who visited, thinks that is a small price to pay. DC has already been admitted to a "T20" university and "higher ranked" SLACs, but will almost certainly attend Macalester next year.

For OP: Macalester gave DC good merit aid, although it was his #1 choice even before he got the aid.

FYI - Mac is changing next year requiring students to live on campus 3 years. I am not sure how they will count students who study abroad.
But the food is really bad - it is a topic that is always discussed on the parent's facebook group due to health related issues.
My child who is there is counting the days until they are able to live off campus due to the poor quality of food service.

Carleton has also moved to higher requirements for on-campus living recently. I think upperclassmen used to be able to live off-campus, but we were told on our tour that the college has recently changed to requiring students to live on campus for all four years after they added some new housing and townhomes. The townhomes looked great from the outside but we didn't see the interior. They're well-integrated with campus at least.

Why do you keep lying about this topic on this board? A young woman was murdered in 2018 in Poweshiek County who was not a student and a Grinnell College student in 1992 was murdered at some point driving back to Grinnell from Evanston. Grinnell and the surrounding area is very safe.

I knew the Grinnell student personally. She was in a different state entirely, far closer to Northwestern, the University of Chicago, UIUC, or any number of any schools than she was to Grinnell. It was an absolute tragedy — one that PP keeps trying to exploit for their own weird purpose, which find disgusting.

Yikes. Did they explore transferring?

Mollie Tibbetts! SAY HER NAME.
Those rural towns around Grinnell are NOT SAFE. They are trailer parks and meth labs.
If your car breaks down, you are in trouble. There is no “Iowa nice” to stop and help you. There are truckers waiting to SA and murder you. If you want to stay in a dorm room or a downtown Grinnell greasy spoon, that might work. If you venture outside the 6-block radius of the campus, you are in danger. Especially if you are not a white man. Grinnell is isolated and scary.

The truckers are doing a terrible job murdering. There's only been two murders in the entire county in the last 14 years, and neither was by a trucker.
