VT Decisions out Tomorrow!

Congrats kids!

I'm surprised by some of the Tech results. I know a few kids that have gotten in w/o being top students or having any significant/special ECs. I keep hearing that Tech is the new UVA? (And I have no dog in this fight. My kid isn't in the mix this year and will not be applying when they are. )

But they kids are all super happy (as it was their first choice, all) and I'm excited for them. I'm sure they'll do great things.

Outside of engineering and business schools, Tech is not that hard to get into. My son's major, in the College of Science, had a 65% in-state acceptance rate last year. He was probably top quarter of his HS class, definitely not top 10%. Minimal ECs.

None of the kids are engineering.

My son got in for engineering.
-Loudoun County
-4.1/1420
- Pretty Good ECs, with significant service
His essays were absolute excellent and one extremely creative and risky.
-Does stand out in math and finished through Calc 3 junior year has to travel to GMU now to take Linear algebra.

he’s way under the average for GPA and SAT for VT engineering and we had very low hopes he’d get in. I do believe they must do a holistic approach otherwise my sons application would
have been tossed with that GPA, especially at a high school where he’s just barely ranked in the top 3rd.

That's awesome! Congratulations.

I haven't read all the replies. DD w/drew her VT app because she ED'd elsewhere. But I'm curious if anyone felt the short essays played a deciding role in your kid's application? I thought DD had 3 pretty good ones and 1 was really a derivative of another and not particularly interesting.

Hi, soon-to-be-cadet mom! Congratulations. Make sure you join the VTCC Parents group on Facebook because most of the discussions surrounding civilian freshmen won’t apply to your family.

Yes, VT is the top choice for many students, whether for STEM or humanities. It’s just a great school that has a ton to offer. I hope they return to using ED after this year so that all those kids can express that it’s their first choice.

Does that make a difference? Posters last night said VT doesn't yield protect.
