Tipping hotel parking valet

It is.

Also, who the hell carries $5 bills anymore. So you’re telling me I gotta now go outta my way to an ATM to get cash, which will probably charge me an outrageous surcharge fee for a withdrawal, then make another stop to buy something or ask a cashier to break the $20 bills the machine only spits out? All so I can tip a valet guy? What a PITA.

The hotel should just pay them appropriately in the first place. Cash is dying. Many people these days never carry any, so it’s much more of a PITA to tip now.

When you travel, you need to prepare and plan. Part of that is going to a bank and withdrawing a bunch of 5s for tips.

Plan for what? Asinine American tipping culture? Why should I pay for it out of pocket if I'm traveling for business?

Won't your company pay you back? Mine will.

Why? It's not like the valet won't bring the car, he just doesn't get a tip for it.

You know you're hurting the most vulnerable person in this whole situation, right? You're not sticking it to the man, you're sticking it to the guy who counts on your $5 to buy a loaf of bread. And if you're traveling for work, it's not even YOUR money!

Do you tip servers and bartenders?

No OP, but bartenders should not be a tipped profession.

That…wasn’t the question.

it's different because the bartender is paid below minimum wage and I assume the valet driver is paid minimum wage or higher.

Why do you assume that

Because the law allows employers to pay below minimum wage for food servers.

Exactly. We are just enabling the entire industry to not pay their employees a living wage and disguising it as "class and manners."

You’re taking your anger at society on a single person (the valet).

Yes. If they have a hard time finding people to work for pennies, they'll be forced to pay people more. It's not rocket science.

This is America. People will always work for pennies, Marie Antoinette.

It’s their job and tips are expected. The second or third time you get your car, you may be waiting awhile.

Except how many of these same people do not tip housekeeping because it is less awkward not do so since no one is sticking their hand out. They work so much harder and I bet they get shafted on tips. Meanwhile, bellhops and valets get tipped well considering the work.

PP. it also it is not lost on me that the roles receiving the better tips are male and the worse ones are women.

So it's a race to the bottom?

Wow, this sounds like such a great job! Maybe some of the people complaining about valets should become one, since it's so easy and lucrative.

Oh please. He can go wait tables if he wants a sure tip. Restaurants are always hiring.

So you only tip on someone else’s dime? How generous of you.

I’m so sick and tired of being browbeaten by this logic. If the guy needs to buy a loaf of bread, his employer needs to pay him a living wage and not rely on me to pay him. That’s who he needs to complain to. I already paid the parking fee which is more than exuberant. You are not being virtuous and saving the little man. You are perpetuating corporate greed. How much did the CEO of Mariott make? Does he care about his own employees as much you want me to care?

It is exponentially easier than a lot of jobs. Get real!

For real. But it's highly dependent on the location. Valet at a podunk chain motel near the ghetto airport area, not so much. Valet at a good casino, kaching!

Do you tip when you drop the car off and when you pick it up?

No one tips me for doing my job!

We do it at pickup. If you have a Lambo or something and say take good care of her, tip at dropoff too. If you want it kept near by for quick departure tell them and tip at drop off too.

I’m literally responding to someone talking about a business trip. Keep up.
