Thoughts on this college list - SLAC with supportive community and mellow vibe

I assume he’s a junior. He should ED to his favorite SLAC. It is really hard to find comparable schools to the more selective SLACs.

I would add Grinnell.

Grinnell is a great suggestion, though not a safety. Any other Midwest safeties to recommend?

Agreed. Skidmore isn't a safety but a potentially good match, and it seems to pride itself with having a collaborative, supportive vibe.

But regarding admissions, it does pay attention to if an applicant has shown some interest – so if you can't visit in peson, at least do a virtual tour or something.

The kid is not getting into Grinnell. Not with limited extras. And definitely not if the kid doesn’t apply ED. The admit rate is in the single digits.

A frequent poster has a kid who goes there and has convinced herself that it’s Harvard.

They are known for being supportive communities.

Oh please. They are known only for banning together for marketing purposes.

Haverford is a HIGH reach with those stats, at least for our school last year (in Naviance). We visited but my kid did not apply after seeing how unlikely it was. It’s a much harder admit than most of your list.

I also think Sewanee is a good suggestion.

I would keep F&M, Union, Lafayette, and UMD, Kenyon. Add Dickinson. I think Bucknell and Lehigh are the WRONG fit, and I can't really comment on the others.

F&M and Lafeyette are very similar to Bucknell and Lehigh.

Lafayette has D1 sports, which makes it a little different than a D3 school.

Mellow vibe = Collaborative vs competitive feel

I am surprised that people aren't more bullish on kid's chances at F&M, Lafayette, Kenyon, etc.

Also, we are full pay - does that make a difference here?

I think kid’s chances are very good but I still think you need a sure thing! Several “seems pretty likely” schools is not the same as a safety!

Except for the random Juniata parent, I’m finding this thread incredibly helpful! The A student’s safety is the B student’s target or reach, so it’s useful info all around.

It’s a valid opinion.
