Brightwood Schools

Large school (700+ kids) and majority ELL students would be my guess. It’s also not terribly hard to get into surrounding DCPS schools, especially in the older grades.

Op, here you can see where kids go to school. There is no difference between Takoma and Brightwood ES regarding IB participation rate (~ 35% both). Therefore, less than half IB people attend these schools.

IB participation rate means the % of IB kids who attend that school.

Right. But 70% of Takoma kids are still IB.

But most of the neighborhood kids do not attend these schools.

Ugh. Talked to my husband and sort of changed everything based on what I keep hearing about MS/HS.

Why can’t EOTP get that figured out?

We could still try and lottery every year while at Brightwood (or Takoma, Whittier), into DCB or try for Latin 5th grade.

Talk about a risk. We wanted to stay in DC but this one came online today:

None of these schools are good enough and you will have to play the lottery every year which will be very stressful. Just try to move to a place where you will feel comfortable with the quality of the schools and you won’t have to worry about that.

There are six pages of replies that suggest otherwise. Whether they're good enough schools for you or OP are up to you to decide, but plenty of people are happy at those elementaries and Wells for middle school. Then there are plenty of options outside of Coolidge for high school. If OP is going to stress and second guess herself every year, then yes, she should move to MCPS or WOTP. But not all of us are stressing and lotterying every year.

I believe you, because a lot of parents do not care about academic achievement, but it seem that OP does.

The Chevy Chase house is pending now, perhaps OP made an offer.

Truly ridiculous claim that parents who are okay with EOTP schools "do not care about academic achievement." Classic DCUM.

A lot of WOTP or busters don't understand that academic achievement is largely down to SES and mother's education level. Meanwhile TJ parents think you don't care about your kid's education. And when any of our EOTP kids get into a college that rejects your kid, you'll call it affirmative action.

What evidence do you have that a family that cares about academic achievement cannot have a kid properly being challenged in the honors classes at Wells? I’m not asking about test score averages.

DCUM uses test scores to determine academic achievement for charters, then the same should apply to DCPS.

Lol this. It's ironic to hear this from the WOTP posters, when you can go to the private school and MCPS forums and hear the exact same rationale used to explain why posters would NEVER send their kids to DCPS. If I believed "academic achievement" depended on the best possible school choice, I certainly wouldn't buy in DC at all. There are suburban and private schools that knock JR out of the water, performance wise. But I don't believe the best school on paper means the best educational outcomes for kids, and don't believe that the best school on paper means the best teaching or school environment.

+1

But they won’t acknowledge that schools like Whittier have improved tremendously in terms of test scores. And given that it is a title 1 school it is all the more impressive.

But how else would they justify their $2m rowhouse??

Perhaps by having a decent middle school and HS feed???

OP here:

No we did not buy that house in Chevy Chase. We are still looking in DC.

we cannot afford WOTP for our needs. We can if we were willing to go smaller in size and no yard, etc.

I started this thread because houses in Brightwood are SFH with front, side, and backyards that really speak to us.

The one we thought would get listed (it was "coming soon") - never did. Maybe they had a change of heart.

Previous PP again. If you're set on DC and EOTP with a SFH and yard, then I do think Brightwood or Takoma are your best bets. Gets you the housing criteria you want, solid elementaries with a promising middle school option, and easy access WOTP if you do decide to lottery for Deal feeders in the future. Keep looking, you'll find your house eventually!
