I’m sure you all are going bankrupt because of the tip on your takeout and dinners out.

I tip for those. What bothers me are the bakeries that put something in a bag and hand it to me, or the coffee place that pours a cup of coffee and hands it over. I’m DCUM poor and those things were a rare treat for me anyway, and I hate how I am expected to now pay $2 more as a tip. Just raise prices if you can’t pay your employees. I can’t stand tipping culture in the US (and, on a tangent, I can’t stand that tax isn’t already included in prices). |
We have tipping culture in the US because we don’t have proper minimum wage, universal healthcare, or really any safety net. Sure the person in the bakery has it easier than a waitress, but neither is likely getting healthcare. I’m DCUM poor but definitely rich enough that my 401k varies more in a week than I will likely ever give out in tips in a year. I don’t freak out about my 401k down 1%. |
No. They should raise their prices and see if people want to buy their $19.47 pho. Don't sneak the higher price in at the end. It's the lack of honesty or opportunity for people to make a decision about spending their own money that bothers people. |
Do you factor in tax when buying food — like in California it’s 10% but VA is 4%? |
It’s implied that you will tip at a restaurant. You’re a horrible person if you don’t. I don’t understand why they can’t just bake the extra 18% into prices to begin with and then just say no tipping. |
|
I sure hope that all the people getting annoyed by the tip screens just say 'no tip'.
It's silly to be embarrassed or feel pressure and those tipping for counter service are just making the problem worse. |
Just say no, like it’s 1985. |
Yes, and if they decide it’s not worth their time, you’ll be scrambling for care. |
I assume the company donates this and gets a tax write off. Which you as the actual donor don’t get. No thanks. |
Wait - are we talking about sitting down at a table or picking up take out? I tip 20% if I'm sitting down with a server, more if the service is really good. I don't tip on take out. |
Not at all the same. You know about tax in advance. The 18% forced gratuity on take out is sneaked in after you have no choice. |
+1 The companies do it so they can get the tax credit. Plus most of the money goes to "management fees." Pick your charities very carefully and donate to them directly to get your own tax credit. Most "charities" run by celebrities are really tax shelters for them and not a lot of your hard-earned dollars actually makes it to the needy. It's really sick. |
Come on. Nobody is firing wait staff right now. That is one of the reasons service is so bad. You don't have to be good to keep those jobs anymore. |
Yeah people always say that but I don't even think that's true. If, somehow, we get all that tomorrow, do you think people will stop asking for tips? I doubt that. Greed knows no end. |
