Is it just me, or does Carolyn Hax seem to take tons of time off?

I was a Hax Super Fan in my 20s when she was still giving advice for 20-somethings. She was unlike any other advice columnist out there and it was amazing.

Now her column has gotten tiresome and there are much better columns out there, like Captain Awkward, at least when she feels like updating.

Hax was in her 30s then. Now she's well into her 50s (I think almost 60?) so her advice has matured too.

I also just think...stop reading her! If she doesn't serve you anymore, move on. I used to be a daily reader, and adored her chats. I will occasionally click in now, and didn't even know she was still doing chats! It's ok really. She did help shape my thinking. I tried to write to her a few times many moons ago, and in the process of attempting to write a letter she wouldn't pick apart, I could normally find MY part of the issue. That was valuable, even if she didn't ever answer me directly.

I mean...my first sentence was literally "I stopped reading her..." and I closed it out with an example of who I read instead but thanks for your insightful advice. It was very Hax of you.

In what way? I do not share that sentiment at all so am trying to see what people object to about her

NP here. People I know who know her in real life say she's incredibly controlling. It's hard for me to like her knowing that. It's like when I find out an actor I like is a jerk, I can't like them anymore.

You can't drop this in without details!

No. I won't because details are too personal.

She was back today, but off next Friday because long weekend. Then when people gave her grief about a response she said "have to pick up a kid. byyyeee."

The kids are all adults. 18+ She hates pushback, even though she has control over what she publishes.

You have a strange amount of disdain for someone whose live chat you are on

Yes, of course they do. What gave you the impression they don’t?

Wow. Really none of anyone’s business.

No one is forcing anyone to read her column. The torch needs to be passed to no one. It is ironic that those who are complaining about her absence likely have no knowledge of offering solutions, advice etc. Let her take her time off-she earned it. Respect her opinions or kick rocks. Why read it follow anything just to criticize? Very tacky. Her advice is 99% spot on and I think the narcissists out there are those critiquing in a negative manner. Bug off.

I like her advice even if I don’t agree with all of it. She is thought provoking and pushes me out of thinking about hard personal stuff in more predictable ways .

I don’t care if she takes time off - the public often offer interesting advice in her place .

We all have to weigh up the way we deal with problems for ourselves anyway .

The off-topic mess in comments is adolescent foolishness. Ruins the entire volume experience.

Um, ok. If my dad dies I get 3 days of bereavement leave. Of course I could take more time off and probably would to deal with his stuff, but most people don’t get/take extended leave for a parent’s death.

That just sounds like jealousy because SHE can. 🙄

I’m really curious why you dug up a nearly year old thread to make this comment

Hax defending herself and her Wapo vacation time?
IDK does she still work for Wapo? Does she still have a column?
Why am I on this thread?

I often find her to be funnier than the comics. Today’s column (10/24/24) on parents retiring to a hostile state was extremely amusing on a number of levels.

Her writing is horrible. As a former English professor, I would have given her a C. And a copy of Strunk & White.

Ah, Strunk and White! Grammerly and the like have overshadowed that classic. OI also remember the Little Brown Handbook fondly.
