If they’re in MCPS and aren’t in a magnet program, they are. |
What's "par"? |
Actually being proficient in math and reading would be a good start. |
We had our kids in private for elementary school and consciously decided our local MoCo public school was a better fit on things that mattered for our kids with where they are developmentally, socially, and academically. The private we were at in DC was too small, socially stifling, bad cohort of new teachers, and was only okay for academics despite all the people who rave about it on DCUM.
We had a great year at our local Bethesda public school. There were trade offs for sure but DC really enjoyed having neighborhood friends, had less social drama at school bc of the ability to have a wider circle and choice of friends, was academically challenged, and was much happier. We saw huge growth in independence and ability to self advocate. For now it meets DCs needs. There may be other privates we would like better but my plan is to reassess schools after a year of middle school or when DC reaches high school. We can easily afford private but the benefits of private (small class sizes) are not in my kids best interest right now. |
By what definition? My kids did just fine per MAP testing. |
MAP testing is a joke. |
Not a W school, but live in Arlington. Can easily afford private, but I don’t want my kids going to school with a bunch of really rich kids. |
So, by what definition? |
LOLOLOL Yeah, because Arlington public schools are totally socioeconomically diverse. |
Just because I have the money doesn't mean I have to waste it on an inferior product. When the DMV private schools can actually compete academically with MCPS, then I'll think about it. |
Look at the stats. Look at the number of students proficient in Math and Language Arts. Look at the morale surveys in MCPS. You have no idea how bad it is. MCPS used to be an attractive place to work for teachers. Now, it’s a mess. How do you think that affects our kids? |
Thanks for the laugh. I needed that. |
JFC some of you exaggerate sooo much. Does MCPS have its share of issues? Yes, but that doesn’t mean no kid is getting an education. Teachers still show up to teach and a whole lot of kids still show up to class everyday ready to learn. And guess what, plenty of kids adapt to the fact that there are problems and like normal people, learn to work around them. Not every kid is in a magnet program. Yet plenty still manage to graduate with good grades, advance course worn and go onto good colleges, apprenticeships, and careers. MCPS would actually be a much better place if some parents weren’t as entitled and others stopped acting like the sky is falling everywhere all at once. |
I didn’t say they weren’t getting any education. I said the education they’re getting is subpar. |
The stats show that kids from poor and non native English speaking backgrounds do very poorly in mcps. In the real world, rich kidd do great and colleges weigh W schools the same as privates. |
