When did your kid learn to ride a bike?

Literally yesterday afternoon! She is 7.5.

If it makes any parents of late bloomers feel better: I didn't get on a bike til I was 5, didn't have training wheels off til 7 and I am now a dedicated cyclist who rides 100+ miles a week.

I had to pay someone to teach my older child. She was totally resistant to learning from us. I think she was 8. My younger one taught himself right before he turned 5 because he was desperate to keep up with the big kids.

One was four and one was nine.

We never did balance bikes with our kids. The oldest learned at 7 during the pandemic in a big empty parking lot. The youngest learn at 7 in DCPS bike riding unit. Neither used training wheels.

We also didn’t really care about the kids learning to ride a bike. We live in an apartment in the city so it was more of a bother than a necessary skill. (By comparison, they’ve been in swimming lessons since 3.) But we’re glad they know and we do go through the effort take them out bike riding now and then.

Our pediatrician did mention that learning to ride a bike is a good way to assess development, coordination, muscle strength, etc in kids.

Our 8 year old just learned this weekend. He had a balance bike as a young kid, but we basically dropped all biking activities during covid (moved to a place it was hard to get out) and just started picking up a dedicated effort this spring. We did no pedals on his big kid bike first and he was able to pick up his balance bike skills pretty quickly. It took him a while to get the hang of getting his feet onto the pedals but within an hour he was doing pretty well with it.

My 6 year old didn't have much balance bike time (see covid comments) and is taking to it more slowly. Still in no pedals phase but hoping we can encourage him this summer.
