I don’t understand this. Why would the government choose to tie their hands in this way? Would it be better to give themselves more flexibility, and say that they can consider experience to negotiate salary up, instead of prohibiting themselves from using a private sector salary at all? |

Has this law passed yet?
No way I’m taking a massive pay cut in today’s economy to work for the federal government. |
They CAN use experience to negotiate salary up. They CAN'T use salary to negotiate salary up. Salary does not equal experience. |
AMEN!!! |
Then don't. I'm sure they have plenty of applicants who will take the job. |
| Women and minorities have systemically underpaid. In California, employers are not allowed to ask for or use previous salaries to determine how much they want to pay you. The law took effect on January 1, 2018 and it has helped with salary equity. Too many women and minorities are underpaid because their new company thinks they can look at what the person has been paid in the past. |
Wholly agree with you, PP. The new job is usually not the same job from the prior place. New jobs usually requires different responsibilities. |
Actually, Trump signed something to vacate the US military from Afghanistan about 18 months prior. And based on the chaotic exit, there was no plan in place. |
It is what's happening in many schools. |
| There is already so much about the federal hiring process that dissuades candidates with strong options. Yes, announcements get lots of candidates, but that doesn't mean those candidates are qualified. This is more everything bagel liberalism, where instead of focusing on doing one thing well - hiring qualified candidates and giving ourselves maximal flexibility to do that - we add on requirements and limitations in an attempt to solve problems like pay equity, even though it makes the core problem we're trying to solve harder. |
You are delusional |
Pay equity could be solved if they would actually just increase the whole GS scale to compete with the private sector. |
This, this, this!! A race to the bottom is the exact right term. HR is in no way qualified to make salary determinations based on a resume. |
Correcting my previous comment. In my agency, I'm sure they are trained on this exercise. But they execute it poorly. We can't even get certs & resumes of qualified candidates because the review is so subjective. Now we are extending this to salary and step calculations. It's definitely going to negatively impact recruitment & incentives. |
