NP. I don’t think it’s going to take long, looking at the trajectory of the academic trends and PARCC scores of the school. My guess is 4-5 years at the most.

This is especially true as the academic caliber of the Walls class decreases with the new admission standards. We have already seen this with the recent class. Just look at the trend in the huge drop in math scores of the school.

Where did you get the Walls math scores info?

DCPS. That is the 3-year data for PARCC scores. Walls had the biggest drop of any public school in DC.

Is there a link? So hard to find details on this stuff.

+1. It’s was a huge drop of like almost 70% I think. It’s crazy how much in such a short period of time.

Unless there was a huge teacher turnover or drastic changes in teaching, this big of a drop in just 3 years, where in the past it was stable, clearly indicates that the recent incoming kids are very weak in math which likely could be extrapolated to academically weak overall.

Yes we had COVID and math scores dropped overall in the city but not to this extreme extent. This is way to the left of the bell shape curve.

Just so we have the data here, the pre-COVID math proficiency rate at Walls was 84%. Post-COVID was 55%.

The post-COVID math proficiency rate at DCI was 22%.

Nope. See below, 3 year change for Walls was down 68% and 31% proficient.

DCI was down 1.9% with 10% proficient.

Keep in mind Walls self selects while DCI doesn’t. DCI also has almost 2xs the at risk than Walls.

You’re looking at just the at-risk kids. The Empower site defaults to at-risk. If you switch to look at all students, it shows a 55% proficiency rate with a 30% drop, just like my numbers show (which is no surprise since Empower and I are both looking to the same underlying OSSE data).

PP here. Sorry you are correct. It’s for at risk kids.

Looks like Walls dropped 30% with 55% proficiency. DCI dropped 10% with 30% proficiency.

The PARCC is a dumb way to measure HS proficiency in math and English. Many upscale school districts around the around the country now use the PSAT or SAT instead of a specific state test. The Feds are fine that approach.

Why should DC HS kids take PARCC seriously? What's in it for them? Many kids at Walls, JR and other DCPS programs essentially blow off PARCC, they might not even turn up for school on testing days. Ask your DC public HS students how many kids were missing on testing days. Many.

Sure kids skip PARCC testing but I would say lots more of the lower performing kids than higher performing kids so true percentages of proficiency is likely lower overall.

What makes you say this? IME, it's the higher performing kids who blow off PARCC, not the lower performing kids.

Are you for real? The lower performing kids sign in and then leave class, roam the halls. Many don’t show up for class and when they do are on their phones, not paying attention.

You actually think they will show up for PARCC and sit thru the test??

Maybe some higher performing kids might skip it with the crazy parents who don’t believe in PARCC. But come on, most take it and are compliant like the good kids they are and the parents want to know where their kid stands.

PARCC sucks as a standardized test but it is what we have in DCPS and it is what it is.
