| Replace it with an eight to ten-lane freeway that will bulldoze Great Falls and cut travel times between Route 7 and the Beltway by 15 minutes. Name the road after Glenn Youngkin. |
Ironically, he'd have to drive on it to get anywhere. |
That's precisely why I suggested the name. And we'll make it real ugly, too: Weed-choked medians. Potholes. Towering non-descript concrete barriers. VDOT knows how to do all of this really well. |
Great. Then the speed limit is the law. There is no common law that applies to people exceeding the speed limit on GP. There is no de facto law that applies to speed limits. |
Lol, but ermegherd bicyclist scofflaws, right? |
Let me help you here. The de jure rule is the law as codified, in this case the posted speed limit. The de facto rule however is to drive consistent with the flow of traffic and road conditions. Comprendes? |
DP. I’m not a “speed absolutist” but I generally try to stay close to the speed limit - certainly not below it, but not much above it either. One thing is for sure - I’m not about to let some arrogant tailgating a$$hole intimidate me into speeding so that he can get where he’s going faster. If anything, tailgating will have the opposite effect. Pretty astounding to read the posts stating that you drive the speed YOU deem appropriate. I’d love for you to tell a cop that when you’re inevitably pulled over. |
+1 MD drivers are all over this area. And the aggressive drivers on G’town Pike are almost always MD drivers. Locals do not drive like that on the Pike. |
| Just use Route 7 if that’s what you want. It’s all ready for you, holds lots of cars and speed limit is higher. The Pike is a historic roadway. It’s not meant to hold lots of traffic at high speeds. The roads off G’Town Pike are neighborhoods and go back quite far.People who drive the speed limit are local and know that school buses and other cars need to get on and off the Pike safely. |
Yep. The OP is just a disgruntled MD-er or someone who lives nowhere near Gtown Pike but uses it as a shortcut. People who live along that road are very careful about driving the speed limit. Hopefully there will be more police ticketing jacka$$es who think they own the road. |
You poor victim. Losing still stings, huh? |
Then go a different way? This is not difficult. |
There may be a social norm for driving above the speed limit but there is no such thing as a “de facto rule” that trumps a posted speed limit. Let’s imagine you got pulled over for speeding and made your de facto argument to a police officer or better yet, to a judge. How do you think that would turn out? |
Oh, come on. I live in Great Falls. This isn't true. We all speed along G'Town Pike.
|
PP. Let me help you out, because you seem to have trouble comprehending what I’m saying. There is a happy medium between religiously driving the speed limit and going 80 mph. I don’t tailgate. That’s part of what it means to “go with the flow of traffic”. If I’m behind you, you probably won’t even know I’m there. I’m sorry you’ve had bad experiences with tailgating a-holes, but I’m not one of them. |
