I know of international students who have had to wait because the cut off date in their land is January, and therefore are older.
so what? You only live once and there really is no hurry to grow old.
As for funding of public schools for all of the extra years!!! What extra years? Everyone is entitled to finish school.

Virtually every high school has some 19 year old seniors. That doesn't make it right.

Sure, a few 19-year-old seniors are not hard to find, because all it takes is for a child born in the springtime (Feb-April) to be held back about 6 months from a September school start date at some point in his/her long school career, and then turn 19 in the springtime of senior year. But the (ridiculous) claim people keep making here is that there are 19-year-old juniors at many DC-area schools. Also, some people are claiming "several" 19-year-old seniors. Those people need to step up and name a school to prove it.

Look, it happen and happens a lot, but clearly those of us at these schools don't want to disclose personal information. If it wasn't so widespread, it wouldn't come up all the time in this forum.

What personal info are people asking for? Asking people to name schools where there are 19 yo juniors is not asking for personal info. No one is asking for names or social security numbers. People post specific information about schools and class make-up all of the time in DCUM. Why should things be so different when it comes to this topic?

Nope. I've come to think it's just stuff that anti-redshirters make up. People disclose all sorts of (true) garbage about schools on these threads, often providing amazing amounts of detail about particular individuals. But as far as I can tell, nowhere in dozens of pages of redshirt posts has anyone ever backed up these exaggerated claims by naming a single school. If you're so frustrated with your school's redshirting, why not name the school?

I think it's because if anyone names a school, others at the same school will be able to refute the exaggeration. If you just refuse to name the school, then there's no way to prove/disprove your claims.

Put up or shut up. It's a challenge.

I was 19 when I finished high school.
A foreign born kid who started shool years in another part of the globe.
I suppose some people here would have preferred it if I had become another high school drop out. But I had enough maturity and life experiences to stick with it.
I even went to college and did not spend 5 years doing a 4 year degree.
And I do not know why some people think it was criminal.

My DS was four when he started kindergarten. He did not turn five for several months. There were kids 16 months older than him in the class. He was (and continues to be) an academic star, and does fine socially and athletically. And if he had a problem, it would never occur to me to blame it on those kids who are so much older than him. I just don't get it.

Well, I'm actually considering it for my "youngest" DD who will turn 5 in Sept so that she won't be 13 and going to a HS with 19 year old men.
