? In MCPS? I wouldn't think the HS would allow that.

DC is taking Spanish 2 in 8th grade, and thinking of taking Latin 1 in 9th and Latin 2 in 10th. I would imagine the Latin class is mostly vocab, not verbal or essay writing.

Yes they do allow it.

After AP Spanish Language and Culture, there is AP Spanish Literature.

Thanks but I don't see that in the course bulletin for Sherwood. My kid is not yet in 12th so we are just thinking ahead and wondering.

I see it is listed as a course on the Sherwood 12th grade registration card:

Thanks for taking the time to look---that looks like current year's card (so filled out last year). When I look at this year's card, I don't see it. Again, this is not a prob, just a curiosity for down the road.

Maybe they had low enrollment? You could ask the counselor about it.

Our enrollment cards had things left off randomly ... so yes, when you need to plan for it, if it is still missing ask your counsellor.

Where does it say colleges want foreign languages at HS? For example:

https://www.admissions.umd.edu/apply/requirements/freshman

UMD does not require applicants taking foreign languages in HS.

It makes sense that UMD doesn’t care because it aligns with state and county requirements.

UVA engineering does not specifically require foreign language:

https://engineering.virginia.edu/future-undergrads/admissions#accordion93610

This web page does not say anything at all one way or another regarding FL. But it does say "UVA Engineering undergraduates apply and are admitted through the University's undergraduate admissions process." That process seems to require 2 years of FL and recommend 4 years: Look under C5 at https://ira.virginia.edu/cds-2020-21

College’s want to see the language in HS AND it should be the same language.

Has anyone heard that colleges will exempt you from their FL requirement if you have 4 yrs of language in HS?

no, you have to take an AP test. MCPS requires 4 yrs of math, but you still have to take math in college, unless you take an AP test and pass. Even then, some colleges won't take the AP exam credit, and you still have to take math.

Yes, well done. But you can take for example, Spanish in 6,7,8 grade and then in 9th change to French for 4 years. They allow this.

Well, SOME colleges are specific about language credits being from HS. Not all.

Unless this changed recently, I have never heard of this being an issue before. Like if you take French 4 in 11th grade, I'm pretty sure no college will complain about that not being "4 years of a single language in HS."*(This is fact what I did. My school only went up to level 4 in FL though. I did get a 4 on the French AP, but even the kids who didn't take the AP still got to waive the FL requirement at most schools - though without the AP, they didn't get the credit hours.)

* At the (very good state) school I went to, you had to take 4 years of FL in HS (clearly they counted MS as well) for liberal arts and 3 years for engineering. If you didn't, you had to take the same number of semesters in college.
