Early decision deadlines are on the horizon. Where is your kid applying ED?

Be careful. It was hit hard by covid. I'm an alum and have received numerous pleas for money due to the "dire" situation of 35 million in the hole. https://www.oxy.edu/back-oxy/community-messages/summerfall-2020-archive/important-financial-updates-2020-21-fiscal-year.

Maybe this should be its own thread, but I would love to hear how other families are working through the question of an ED to a 95% rejection rate school versus a more likely submission. If you get in on the latter, then you might be saying "what if" to the harder school. On the other hand, if you get into the "easier" one, you are done. And if you apply to the "harder" one and get denied, then you have to scramble ED2 or sweat RD to the "easier" one.

I think that would be a good new topic. Interested also about chances at ed1 vs ed2.

Someone should start a thread on the above. Dh and I wanted dd to do Ed for the "easier" school, she wanted to do Ed for the "harder" school. Ugh.

No just a regular middle class African American girl from DC. It’s a dream and a stretch. Her counselor said that University of Miami is a likely whether she does ED or regular. I think she should just go for ED at Duke because I worry that we need financial aid and UM is not need blind.

Thanks PP above. That is what I'm encouraging her to do! You just never know. It is considered a reach but atleast she can get that rejection over with early and focus on other schools. I personally do not like Miami. I feel it is full of reach spoiled kids. Not sure she would fit in socially and not quite sure why she likes it. Notre Dame is another school she is thinking about for ED but Duke is really her dream school.

Definitely ED Duke and then while she waits continue to identify additional RD schools.

NP here. Did you run the Net price calculator for Duke? Duke is known for good financial aid assuming you qualify.

dont forget about ED 2 and maybe start thinking now about which school you might ED2. My 2025 student got deferred from Dartmouth ED 1, and then by mid-december got spooked and there were only two schools on her list that had ED2 and she chose one of those and was accepted and shes happy, or I think she is. So it all worked out. But if we'd thought about ed 2 in advance we may have added more schools to the list earlier that had ED 2. It is pretty hard mid-December to add new schools just logistically with all the essays etc.
