| DD is starting 6th grade tomorrow. She’s adjusting to a large backpack and binder. She was told to get two composition books and a spiral notebook as well. Should she bring ALL of that on the first day? A neighbor convinced her that there is no time to get back to her locker between classes. Sorry if these are dumb questions but she is so worried about carrying a giant backpack tomorrow. |

Some MS have policies that prohibit going to your lockers during the school day. For my son's MCPS MS, this was the case - it was at least partially related to overcrowding. All the kids used Case-it binders with shoulder straps and carried them throughout the day. He's now starting HS and apparently it's the exact opposite there, which is equally confounding!
Either way, my theory is that they'll get a lot of information over the next few days about what they need and what the policies are, so don't sweat it too much tonight. |
| That actually doesn’t sound like that much stuff to me. Tell her to bring it all-Better to be prepared. She’ll have a better idea of what she needs later and can pare it down |
| My middle schooler has 4 binders, 6 composition notebooks, an art sketchpad, a spiral notebook, 6 folders and a pencil case. That doesn't sound like much to me. |
| Tell her to relax. She doesn't really need to bring it all the first day. The teachers will be telling her what she needs for each class when she gets there. As long as she has paper and pencil, she should be fine! (although it can also be good to bring in what she's done of the summer homework, if anything. But it's also okay if they don't do that.) |
| My middle schooler's principal sent a note saying that all that was needed for the first day of school was a notebook and pencil. |
| No need to take it all on day 1. I would have her take a few things each day. Make sure she has a pencil and some paper on first day. |

Tell her not to worry too much. They will give her clear directions. My son likes his Case-It zippered binder and takes that to classes. I think that for his classes requiring notebooks, he was allowed to return to his locker to get them? Best of luck! The first day is always stressful. |

This sounds like no big deal. Buy her the spiral notebooks that have 3-hole punch so she can put them in her binder if she wants.
My DD rarely went to her locker during the day because it was far away from all her classes. |
Is she bringing it all on the first day? |
If she has all the classes that correspond with those school supplies, then she should be. |
