Are senior pictures a thing?

If so, are they done through the school or a private photographer?

All the seniors in DC’s yearbook appear to he of the boys in identical tuxes and girls in identical gowns, which would suggest some school-level coordination, but we haven’t seen anything.

They are done through the school for the yearbook, just like other years.

But in addition, getting professional photos on your own has cropped up as a thing in recent years.

I live in the south and senior photo shoots are the thing! For boys and girls and you get sent a graduation announcement that looks like a photo birth announcement, with multiple photos. I have a sophomore and I don’t think he will want to do one, actually I’m hoping he doesn’t b/c I think it is over the top.

They were always a thing! Didn't you get yours when you were a senior? It was a huge deal at all 3 high schools I attended (military brat) and I couldn't wait for my own senior year to get my senior picture.

For the yearbook at the school where I graduated, girls had to have the same top but then we all got extra pix in tops that took ages of time to find so that you had just the right look. And don't get me started on the hair or make-up. Even the guys got senior pictures.

I have to say that I still really like mine even though it is 30-35 years later! All that time and effort really paid off. I looked GOOD!!!

All 4 of our seniors got their senior pictures. In addition to it being a great thing to send to grandparents, it is the picture they each used for a while on resumes and college apps.

Where are you located? MCPS rising seniors had theirs done over the summer at the school, or by appointment at a studio if you missed the scheduled sessions.

When do seniors typically have their (private) senior portraits done? I'm a family photographer interested in getting into that business.

Our kids have only done the traditional yearbook senior portraits. We never do the private portrait sessions that seem to have become popular. I take plenty of pictures myself, so no need to spend more on extraneous photos.

That hasn't been a thing for any of my kids or their friends. The school-affiliated session includes the formal grad photo plus a few more casual outfits and backgrounds. There's no need for anything more, and I don't know anyone doing it.

I don't know if it's a thing in my kids' HS (DS starting 10th grade) but I am planning on professional photos in addition to any at-school yearbook photos. 1. My senior yearbook photos were awful and 2. I haven't had professional photos done of either child since they were little. I'd like some really nice photos to mark that transition. A friend is a professional photographer and I've loved the senior photos I've seen her take so I plan to have her do them.

I'm 55 and it was a 'thing' when I was in high school in the midwest. It is not a new thing.

+1 We are in the south now and those senior photo shoots are quite the thing. I was glad that my son was happy with the traditional senior tux photo because those photo shoot packages are $$$$$.

I don't think that I could have paid my son to do the photo shoot thing even if I had wanted him too, lol.

I went to high school in CA and CT. It wasn’t a thing at either of my schools. But I was also somewhat poor, so perhaps more affluent areas did it.

I graduated in 1989.

Everyone did photo shoots with an outside photographer back then, involving multiple outfits, poses, different backdrops or outside, shots in your uniform, etc.

It is not a new thing at all.
