| Is FCPS using online textbooks for math for 1st grade? How do we access them? |
| No, not at our school. My kid is in 3rd and so far, in K-3rd, they haven't used textbooks. |
| They purchase rights to one you can access if you ask, but they don't use it for teaching. it is MUCH easier than what they learn and a waste of time. |
It is not MUCH easier. My AAP kid used Envision's worksheets before along with some other supplements also from textbooks or workbooks and got a much stronger educational experience from these than from the teacher's made up worksheets the following year. |
| There’s a new math program at our school. Only online. This lack of actual math books is contributing to teacher burnout and low math scores. I have to download any kind of actual paper assignment that I want kids to do, hoping that the network is up, the copier isn’t jammed, and there aren’t a bunch of other teachers in line to use the copier. It is incredibly time consuming. There’s no book for a kid to review, except their interactive notebook which also takes a ton of time for the teacher to create materials for. Just give us a freaking workbook already! The rest of math is a large group lesson and meeting in small groups with the teacher while other kids rotate through computer and game stations and all kids are distracted. And the teacher has to make all the games and assign the groups and try to keep everyone on task while working with the small groups and make and grade exit tickets. Yes, I’m retiring. I’m a really good teacher, but I can’t keep up teaching without actual books for any subject any longer, and giving every kid an iPad makes my blood run cold. |
| Our FCPS puts links and passwords on blackboard but never refers to the textbooks. DS tried to log in once last year to see it and the link didn’t work. The teachers use worksheets all year. They either didn’t have one or didn’t mention it in 1st grade. They did by 3rd, maybe 2nd. I don’t remember exactly. My youngest was in 1st last year and there definitely was not an online book. |
Parents are all behind you. Honestly it's your fellow teachers that day they want to use something else. Talk to one of the Fairfax Teacher Associations and be the change along with teachers who are in agreement. It doesn't mean that teachers can't use their own materials. Just means they have one set of materials as a base. |
