Disney cruise booked- not sure how to handle kid makeover/ costume nights

Anonymous
We just booked a Disney cruise. We have 3 young elementary aged daughters. They have a salon on the ship that offers makeovers for the costume nights and turns them into princesses. They are absurdly priced at $100-$200 per makeover (costumes included) to say nothing of our general opposition to princesses being dependent on men. I'm sure our daughters would be ecstatic to do them. If we don't do them they won't be obnoxious but they will definitely have noticed them and internally be a littlesad. We have very considerable means and would meet almost anyone's definition of rich. id love to see our kids faces light up but at the same time I don't want to spoil them or highlight the dependence of women on men.

Should we sign up for the makeovers? I understand they fill up quickly, so we need to declde soon.

I’ve done Disney cruises and the costume night is Pirate’s, with I think some ships doing Star Wars or superheroes. Some girls do the Bippity Boppity Boutique but definitely not everyone and I don’t know of an organized night for it?... my kids don’t dress up for pirate night and it’s no big deal.

You're already exposing them by going on the cruise, might as well go all in

You are taking them on a Disney cruise. Odd choice if you have an issue with princesses.

you can afford it, they are only young once, just do the princess thing.

Just take some glittery makeup, hairspray and princess dress. You'll be fine.

If it's new to them, it'll be good enough.

Not sure this is the right forum for this question.

Don't like "princess culture", don't support Disney in general.

Agree, but OP tell them about real life Princesses like Queen Elizabeth the 1st and 2nd.

Or, you know, don't rush to sign up and then -- ooops--it's already full.

I think the Disney Princess stage is for many girls roughly what the dinosaur stage is for many girls. It's more about learning to memorize a large collection of obscure facts than about romance or sexism. The princess fanatic today may be the kid who lectures you at great length about LGBTQi etiquette tomorrow. So, I wouldn't stress about that.

And I suspect there are a lot of broke parents on that cruise who will spring for the makeover. I think you might as well let them have the makeover if you think they'll enjoy.

It's definitely the right forum. The question is about money, finances and whether or not to spend it. It's not a question of whether one can afford it, but the money and finances forum is not that narrow.

I didn’t sign up my daughter for the makeover because she wanted to be in the pool and hot tub all the time so it didn’t make sense. We did buy pirate costumes before we left and she had a great time dressing up for pirate night. We also splurged on the “tea” and she had a blast at that event and I am glad we spent the money on that instead of the makeover.
