Health and Medicine
| I'm really eager to get my kids vaccinated, especially since they're under 10 and will need two doses--and I'm constantly reading about new cases of H1N1. But the idea of waiting in line for hours with my kids is terribly unappealing. I'm thinking of waiting a couple weeks until the lines are less intense, but I'm so fearful that my kids will catch the virus in the meantime. It seems that everyone is swarming to the clinics and I'm starting to feel panicky. |
| I'm waiting. I can't imagine waiting in line for hours with two very active little boys. |

I was going to wait out the rush and then talked to a friend today whose 3 kids just had it (different city). She described 9 straight miserable days at home with the kids. Husband sick too. 1 all-night ER visit for her youngest who had convulsions and blue lips. I decided right then that the few hours at the clinic tonight sounded unappealing, but far less unappealing than what she was describing.
It really wasn't that bad at the DC clinic tonight -- no standing which was very humane. Organized and helpful staff. Patient and calm crowd. I could not believe how good all the kids were actually -- including my own. It must be the herd mentality. They saw all the other kids sitting there politely and so they did it too. I could have made it easier on myself by bringing books, paper and crayons, more snacks....I brought nothing but diapers and water. Dumb. |

Just heard on the news that people have been standing in line at the Rockville clinic since midnight, leaving their kids to sleep in the car. This past week, I weighed going this morning with my 2 year old who's asthmatic, but thought the discomfort of two hours in a line was too much for him. Fortunately we "aren't" going since this one looks to be a nightmare.
The risk of course, is that they run out. Rockville's already got an extremely limited supply of injectibles. |

Rockville may run out, but if you are willing to travel a bit farther, there will be plenty of vaccine. They are trying to hit priority populations now.

I don't know why Rockville is so insane. I was at Arlington health dept. clinic twice yesterday for each child. In the morning (about 11 am) it was a 10 minute wait. In the afternoon (3:30...they close at 4) I waited 40 minutes with my older DD.
I brought drawing supplies. The worst part was being in a confined space with 80 kids...probably getting H1N1! My rationale is that since my kids need two shots and if I wait too long they may get H1N1 before it all takes effect. |
