Infertility Support and Discussion
| They announced it on their website. It's $27K including the drugs. Has anyone tried to get into this program after one or more failed cycles? I am about to start my 3rd cycle and would love to get into this program, but I doubt they will let me since I am on the max dose of drugs. I emailed the shared risk liason, but have not heard back yet. I'm not optimistic... |
| OP here, maybe I am the only one who cares - but it sounds like if you are in shared risk you can add the meds option. I am a poor responder (on max dose of drugs) w/two failed cycles and they let me in. I was paying $5000/round for drugs -- so we figured this was a good deal. Expecially since we'll need that money back to pay for DE if needed. |
| This is great news, thank you so much for sharing this. If my 3 donor IUIs do not work then I will move onto SG's shared risk program for IVF. So happy to hear the meds are included now. I personally think its a great deal. |
I agree, sorry OP, you're not the only one who cares.
I was going to do it, i'm in the middle of my third IVF, just starting w/ SGFC - but the drug program wasn't official yet.... and i take a lot too - i probably spend about 3.5K on drugs per cycle-- but i would get a consult w/ the doctor and the financial counselor to ask if you would be a candidate.... good luck! |

Hi there - I'm a current SG patient and just signed my consent forms for shared risk. If you are already enrolled in their Shared Risk program you cannot add this "meds rider" on to your Shared Risk contract.

OP here, according to my nurse, SG went back and forth about whether to allow current shared risk patients to enroll and ended up deciding to let them into the program. I had to push after being initially told that I didn't qualify b/c of 2 failed cycles. I asked the financial counselor in the DC office to confirm with Rockville and he called back and said I did qualify after all.
One thing to note, if you are in the shared risk w/drugs you have to take drugs shady grove is able to get a discount on. This meant that I switched from Menopur to Luveris (I am still on Gonal F). But the overall amount of LH/FSH I am on stayed the same. I'm still taking Endometrin (not PIO shots). You get the drugs thru Freedom Pharmacy (they have a special 1-800 number for shared risk patients). So far everything has worked smoothly, but I have not ordered refills yet. |
| Can't help wandering if this shared risk is really a good deal, I know a lot of people who got pregnant their first cycle which means they paid almost double for their treatment. I guess it provides some peace of mind, but it seems like a lot of money. |

Good point PP...Anyone know the difference in cost between doing the new SG Shared Risk program with meds and just paying for one cycle of IVF with meds? Ballpark figure...Thank you!

" I asked the financial counselor in the DC office to confirm with Rockville "
Big mistake - I would never rely on Cleveland to give accurate information. After a huge problem with my insurance my first cycle, I had all my financial dealings with the Rockville office. I told them straight out that I did not trust Cleveland, and they said I wasn't the only one. I still don't know why SG won't fire him after all the complaints about him. |

shared risk with meds: 27.5K (I think 29.5K with ICSI)
one cycle of IVF ~9K + $500 for ICSI if needed + anywhere from 2K-5K for meds depending on how you respond = 11.5K to 14.5K |
yea it's really not a good deal if you get pregnant right of the bat, but i'm feeling pretty desperate right now and feel like i am willing to pay 2x the cost to not have to go through all 6 cycles (plus any frozen). |

Thank you so much poster 09:25!
Holy crap! $30k! How can anyone afford this? My husband and I have a combined income of $200K and we still cannot afford this! Can anyone share how they are saving for this if insurance does not cover IVF? Should I just take my chances and hope the first or second cycle works? |
we are not using our savings. dh feels like if we take out of savings we'll likely not put it back. we own a home and took out an equity line in april 09. i am in my 2ww with my first shared risk fresh ivf cycle and am fine if we ended up spending 20K for one cycle. and after paying out of pocket for 4 iui's, 1 fresh ivf, and one frozen ivf (and now the 20K + drugs for s/r) i am also glad to know that i am already locked in for 5 more cycles (hopefully we won't need them). we have spent a total of $65K. but we use our FSA when we can, and we also took the medical deduction last year on our taxes, and most likely will do that again this year - which helps a little.... hind sight 20/20 yes i wish a year and a half ago before the very first iui i would have known what i know now, but our very first iui did work but ended in m/c. so every time we were still so hopeful. i can't look back now. it's so difficult - all of this is. if it's not the side effects from the horomones i take, or the emotional roller coaster and mind games i experience, then it's the very stressful financial aspect. |
| Thank you so much for sharing your experience poster 11:42. I feel EXACTLY the same way you do about everything. I wish you so much luck with this cycle and I seriously hope you do end up overpaying for this cycle. It will be the best money you've ever "over spent!" Please keep us posted on your results. |
thanks! i'm glad that i am not alone. will keep you posted. |
