Because it's a situation that could critically affect lives, OP could easily be ID'ed, Jeff doesn't like the site involved in potential lawsuits (understandably), etc.

Probable troll. Who has turmoil like that, wakes up, and thinks to themselves, “I should be taking action on about 1,000 things to remedy this situation, but I’m going to start a thread on DCUM and thoughtfully monitor the responses instead.”

You're probably right and Jeff has lots of experience identifying trolls. But I would offer that sitting at the airport for your flight while freaking out offers the opportunity to find an audience on DCUM. So it's not that far fetched.
