Lopsided weight loss

Anonymous
I am pretty overweight but in May I made some dietary changes and I have been pleased by the weight loss.

Most of my weight loss seems to be around my waist, which is nice. I have gone from being apple shaped to much more hourglass. Still fat hourglass, but my hips/butt are now bigger than my waist. That’s good.

But what is weird is that the difference between my hip and waist on one side is much bigger than on the other side. It’s really obvious if I stand naked in front of mirror and getting bigger.

Is that weird, and if so is there anything to do about it?

You can't spot reduce, but you could do bodyweight exercises to build up the muscles. Do both bilateral and one-side exercises and hopefully the other side will catch up.

Can you tell if it's because there is more fat on one side? It's also possible that the bigger side has more muscle, or you have a structural asymmetry that makes one side appear larger.

Congrats on the weight loss!

How much bigger? You may be scrutinizing yourself mercilessly. I doubt anyone notices. Congrats on the weight loss!

I would be concerned about a growth or something.

+1. Maybe a fibroid/hernia/tumor? ?

Congrats on the weight loss!

I can’t tell if it’s that I lost more fat from the left hip or that I lost less fat from the left side of my waist.

That does sound unusual. I would see my doctor for a checkup. Congrats, keep up the good work!

No one notices, I can guarantee that, because I wear loose clothes that are even looser now! You could maybe notice if I was wearing a bathing suit and I pointed it out to you.

If I had to estimate, if I lay down and you traced around me like a kindergartener studying the human body, My left hip would stick out beyond my waist by half as much as my right hip? Maybe 1/2 - 1 inch on the left, 1 - 2 on the right?

I'm not worried about how it looks, although I guess if I kept losing in the same pattern it could eventually look weird.

I should add that I took a bad fall, and was limping pretty dramatically for a couple weeks, so maybe I did develop uneven muscles under all the fat?

There's a good chance that's the cause, your pelvis may have been knocked out of alignment. Have you had any pain or stiffness since?

The leg is fine, I've had some lower back pain that comes and goes for years, but nothing new.

Talking to your doctor is a good idea. You may be walking or bending in a way that makes you look asymmetrical--PT or a chiropractor might help. But most people do have some level of asymmetry.

When I stand and look down at my belly, it sticks out more in the right than the left. It was likenthat beforebI had kids and when I was pregnant I had a lopsided bump. One of my hip bones is 3/4” higher. You would never notice unless I tried to wear a fitted sheath dress and didn’t have the hem custom tailored. Bodies are not always symetrical and it’s easier to tell the less fat you have.
