Youth Rugby Offers Pleasant Reprieve from Hyper Intense Youth Sports

The Maryland Exiles have concluded another successful summer of rugby for their youth programs, and now are looking forward to the future.

Maryland Exiles Youth Rugby filled out multiple teams at the U7, U9, U11, and U13 levels. "It was the most successful season we have had numbers wise," stated Program Director Steven Jacobs, "and the large numbers translated into outstanding results on the field. Everyone played, nobody kept score, and the kids had blast."

The high school teams experienced tremendous success as well. Boys Coach Mark Cohen led his team to several victories during the summer developmental season. "I was impressed how quickly the new guys picked up the game," said Cohen, "and it was a big reason for our success in tournaments like Hurricane Sevens."

High School Girls Team Coaches Karl Heineman and Hugh Ferridge likewise enjoyed the success of their program this summer. The Maryland team dominated the Eastern Regional Tournament in New Jersey.

All programs are looking ahead and recruiting more numbers going into the fall. "Each age grade team graduates players, and each team looks for new recruits to improve and strengthen the club," explained coaches David King and Jason Maloni continuing, "we're always looking for new players that want to be a part of the program."

That's great. I always love to hear about successes in sports outside the usual set.

Both my kids played youth rugby. Great game, great experience. Very fond memories for all of us.

As a rugby fan who used to live in New Zealand and appreciates a good haka, I am amused by the notion of rugby not being intense. I mean, I know what you mean — there’s less competition for spots on teams etc. so fewer anxious players and less youth sports insanity. But still, it makes me chuckle.
