Sometimes when we hike it is clear although I am not elderly that my son is more agile and has greater stamina. It gives him a chance to be strong and have patience with me. It's a moment of role reversal and I think it makes us both feel good.
+1 on river rafting, and there are some good options nearby (Harper's Ferry) and some really good options a bt farther away (WV and Deep Creek Lake area). Longer trip can be a combined camping trip. Would recommend whitewater not float trip, great fun experience and makes dad look(and feel) pretty cool too.
My husband and son did a Sea Base Adventure with their Boy Scout troop in South Florida. They sailed for a week and fixed their own food. They would dock at different marinas. They learned the technicalities of sailing and what to do if boat capsizes. You need to know how to swim to participate.

LL Bean and REI have many local outdoor adventure programs and classes (all levels, even introductory classes for beginners):
https://www.llbean.com/llb/ods/33?page=outdoor-discovery-schools&nav=gnro-hp I believe REI also has these types of program. Go to their website for more information. |
I’m a mom, but I take my tween son on ropes courses, indoor rock climbing, and camping. We are planning a backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail for later this month. He’s a physical kid, and I’ve found we bond doing physical adventure type stuff.
