Ski/Family fun spot between DC and NYC

Anonymous
We are heading to NYC over the holidays and I was thinking it would be fun to stop on the way somewhere where we could introduce by older DC (5) to skiing and maybe going tubing with him and his little brother (3). Can anyone recommend a spot relatively on the way that would be a fun place to spend a night or two and that would be kid/beginner friendly and have enough to keep us occupied?

I like the way you think, OP -- we're always torn between NYC and skiing at Christmas, and have had many great family vacations along these lines with our kids, who are now teens and tweens. The tricky part, though, is that you might have to go north of NYC -- e.g., Hunter Mountain-- to combine the two. Now that our kids are older, we spend a couple of days in the city and then go on to VT or NH, but that's a long trip with little ones. An alternative might be White Tail -- it's not really on the way to NYC, but you can go through PA and take 80 across NJ to the city. (We've actually done this on Thanksgiving trips to NYC to avoid traffic.)
