Homeschooling/online school and applying to college

Anonymous
We are currently considering homeschooling our DD (or using an online program.) We are interested in exploring this option so she may pursue figure skating more seriously. We would still like to her to apply for college but are worried that it might be a disadvantage to homeschool when applying for college. Does anyone have experience with this? She is currently going into 8th grade so we have a year to decide what to do. She is happy in school btw, but really wants more hours to pursue her passion.

Homeschooled students can do well in college admissions provided that they have excellent standardized test scores and recommendations from someone other than the parents.

Agree with this. Have gone through process with two kids so far. For elite schools, you will need AP and/or SAT subject test scores. Make sure that your child takes all of the required courses (foreign language, etc.)

The trade-off of a traditional high school experience for the demands of elite figure skating is great. I agree with the previous posts that she will still be competitive for college with the right curriculum and test scores. But, long days at the rink. off-ice and dance training can be emotionally straining to a young teenager. I know in some school districts you can take part of your schedule in school and part online; allowing for either a late start or early dismissal. Good luck!!

I completed my last 2 years of high school through the University of Missouri online high school. It had the same accreditation as my local high school and I had no issue getting into a private and a state flagship with scholarships. I now hold a PhD, so I don’t think it was disadvantageous.

OP here: Thank you so much to all of the previous posters. I hadn't thought of the idea of doing a hybrid of partial school/partial online school. I will look into that option.

Thanks again!

OP - there was a post in this forum about homeschooling and the difficulty that the parents experienced because they were inexperienced in the college application process. It was posted @ 9 months ago. I'm sure if you search here in college and homeschooling you will find it.
