Benadryl for toddler on Europe flight?

Anonymous
Would you do it? My son (19 months) has had Benadryl before when he broke out in hives and it knocked him out (so no worries about the hyper reaction some kids get). We're going to Spain next month on a red eye and he will be in his own seat in a car seat. Would others in this situation give him the Benadryl to ensure he sleeps? He did a red eye last year and fell asleep on his own, but he was a baby then vs. wild toddler now. We are leaning towards giving it, but if the consensus is that it is awful horrible parenting, we may rethink, ha.

I'd do it for sure. But I'd also be prepared for it to not really work. That way if he sleeps, great. But it's certainly not a guarantee. Have back up option for entertaining him.

No, you are going on a night flight + car seat. Also, his sleep cycle + Benadryl will be much longer than the flight.

OMG OP, why are you buying a seat? Neurotic.

I truly do not know how you guys can just drug your kids so they will sleep. You are terrible.

Please just be a parent and figure things out without dragging you kid. Holy shi!

LOL. Seriously considering drugging your kid?

I would give him dramamine instead.

I can't offer any advice one way or the other but I've heard some parents say that Benadryl had the opposite affect on their DC and had them bouncing off the walls lol.

I did not do it, and my 2 y/o fell asleep overnight on the flight to Europe.

Toddler DD has had Benadryl several times, and her reactions have varied from lethargy to hyperactivity. Due to that unpredictable nature, no, I wouldn't do Benadryl solely to get through a flight.

First, I’ve traveled with that age and didn’t need it.

Second, practice again with drug at home if you want to use it for that purpose.

I gave Benadryl to myself and my two elementary age kids age for a red eye flight. Was perfect. If you think your 18 month old will sleep otherwise, then don't. Maybe bring it along, just in case.

What an idiotic post.

Have done several trips to Europe with toddlers on night flights - they always sleep so have never needed to use Benadryl.

Especially because OP says the toddler will be in his own seat, in his carseat.
