| There is major construction going on at Silver Spring International Middle School. Anyone know what is planned? |
| Purple line |
| I should add that I live in Queen Anne’s and used to exercise near the school. The loss of the mature trees was really hard on me. |
| The loss of trees is awful. DD attends SSIMS, and is so used at how it looks now. |
"upset", not used. |
| I had no idea those trees were going to be cut down. The site looks naked and is hot as blazes now. |
| It looks like a scene from The Lorax |
| The entrances to the parking lot are being rebuilt and a retaining wall is being put in. |
| Why do the parking lots need rebuilt????? |
As mentioned above, to accommodate the construction of the Purple Line station. |
I mean, that may be part of it but the traffic patterns for SSIMS are a nightmare. If you are coming from DTSS or just from Dale (where many SSIMS families live), trying to get into the parking lot is a nightmare. |
Here's info about the new station: http://www.bethesdamagazine.com/Bethesda-Beat/Web-2016/Here-Are-the-Latest-Designs-for-Montgomery-Countys-Purple-Line-Stations/index.php?cparticle=7&siarticle=6 |
You can kind of see it in the drawing in the link, but the upper parking lot will open onto Dale Dr., and the lower parking lot will be accessible from Wayne. The trees are supposed to be replanted once the construction is finished next year, but of course they won't be the same mature trees that were there before. They're supposed to net a few more parking spaces from the new construction. |

Small replacement trees will take over 100 years to replace what was there. If we were Takoma Park, those trees would never have been allowed to be cut down.
From what I’ve seen thus far at SSIMS and over on Lyttonsville, “green” transportation means slash and burn all mature greenery in sight. It’s an abomination. |
Here's another view of how the parking lots will be reconfigured:
