Volvo xc60, Subaru outback, Acura MDX, Hyundai Santa fe

Or nissan Murano or even Kia Sorento.

Just totaled my car with our two small kids in it, I know want to maximize shighest end safety technology, followed by reliability. Used to drive Highlander, can't afford it with all the safety gadgets I want. Will be buying CCPO -- yes I did that other thread

Hopefully everyone is okay?

I have the MDX and I love it, can't compare it to the other cars. The package we got cost us $50k.

If you want safe, don't get an SUV (or get a Tesla Model X, but those are super expensive). Seriously.

I hope you and your kids are all right. That had to be scary.

Totaling a car is simply an insurance term. It can range from a bent frame (on an older car - not worth fixing) to a catastrophic accident. Sounds like the OP and his/her kids are fine, otherwise the OP would have mentioned it.

That said, Subaru's are solid vehicles, but the Acura MDX is larger and higher.

Right now you're desperate for safety, but take a deep breath. The safest thing you can do is keep your head on a swivel. Unfortunately, kids in the back can be a massive distraction, and may cause you to take your eyes off the road. Resist this temptation, but if you can't, pull over to the side of the road or a parking lot. Pulling over will have a dramatic effect on children's behavior.

your last 3 is not in the same class as your first three

All good choices.

I'd say the Outback for combination of value and safety features, since this is the money & finance forum.

Or the volvo for the more premium safety experience.

Lexus LX570 is the best choice, bar none.

Because....?

Volvos and Subarus are the safest cars on the road. Go for a wagon (lower center of gravity, more cargo space) over an SUV for even better safety, utility, and value.

Look at IIHS website. I’m pretty sure Subaru is consistently getting better safety ratings than Volvo these days. Must have front end collision avoidance though. For Subaru, that’s called eyesight.

Setting aside the dork factor of a wagon, an SUV is heavier and has a higher occupant seating position which means it will protect its occupants better in the event of a crash.

We love our subaru with eyesight

We have an Outback and a Highlander. Prefer driving the smaller Outback around town but feel safer on the highway in the larger Highlander. Happy with both vehicles.

I am really confused how you can afford an MDX and not the Highlander. We bought the top-of-the line Highlander last year because of its CR safety and reliability ratings, and it was much less than the Acura MDX. Our second choice was the Santa Fe.
