I'm just starting to 'grow' out of my regular wardrobe and don't know where to go for modern, decent looking but not crazy expensive maternity clothes. I've tried on maternity pants at Kohls and Old Navy but I'm tall (5'9) and they are all high waters and so baggy through the thigh/knee. I need professional clothes as well as casual. Suggestions?
Also, if anyone is looking to sell their fall/winter maternity wardrobe let me know. I typically wear a size 6/8...that too, why are maternity clothes only S, M, L, XL? |

Ann Taylor Loft has maternity, but very few stores that carry it in the area, they have more on-line. Motherhood Maternity (all of the area malls) has decent casual stuff at very reasonable prices (especially jeans and courdorys, which come in short, regular and tall) if you are willing to hunt for it, the stores are cluttered. Mimi Maternity (one at Chevy Chase, not sure where else) is a mid range maternity (tops in the $60 - $80 range) with good business wear. A Pea in the Pod (Pentagon City) is very expensive, it has $250 maternity jeans, etc. I also got some cheap casual stuff at the JC Penney outlet.
Hope that helps! |
| Appleseed in Old Town is small but quite the gem for maternity clothes. I live in Bethesda and it was worth the trek for me. I got 3 pairs of work pants which I've been rotating every day. I also got a pair of dark skinny jeans (I'm 5'4", but they're a bit long on me so they should fit you) that I wear every weekend. |
| Pea in the Pod - the best stuff. Buy fewer pieces to offset some of the higher prices. You don't want to scrimp during those last couple months when you are not feeling your best. Really helps to know you look your best! |
| there are also plenty of non-maternity options (mostly for shirts and dresses) that work for most of your pregnancy. in fact, i still have some tunic shirts that are still long enough (37 weeks) but some maternity shirts that will not cover my belly. |
| Isabella Oliver... sort of expensive but the best stuff out there. |
| imho, the target maternity collection is pretty good, as is H+M, but that is my price point. i bought some tops at ON and H+M in a size 16 or so (meaning, regular clothes, not maternity) and was able to wear into the ninth month, but i was one of those weight distributed all over the body-type preggos (and not a beachball-type preggo). i did have to have maternity pants, though. but come to think of it, i also bought some cotton skirts at American Apparel in an XL and wore them for a long time pre and post-p as well. totally worth it, but i was pg in spring and summer mostly. |
| I like to spend on pants and a few nice dresses at Pea in the Pod, and then for tops go to Gap or Mimi. I felt that the better-fitting pants made me feel a lot happier with myself. Also 5'9" and size 8 ... |
| My favorite source for stylish maternity clothes was mimi maternity and japanese weekend. Not sure where you live but 9 Maternity in Rockville carries some japanese weekend stuff, not tons though. You can order it all online and their customer service is excellent at helping you figure out which sizes to get. I had two pairs of sort of loose pants from JW, and they worked for me for the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, and were awesome when I was post-partum. They were pricey, but they got me through two pregnancies, so they were totally worth it. And their tops and dresses are gorgeous. |
| I loved Appleseed in Old Town as well. More stylish options than your typical maternity stores. |

I'm 5'9" too and got some great stuff from H&M (only the Metro Center store has maternity in this area, I think). I had to go up a size or two - a lot of their pieces are cut kind of narrow and they don't add as much stretch (if any) as other maternity manufacturers.
I really liked Old Navy jeans - they come in tall online. I have a regular pair that I wear with flats and the tall ones I wear with a heel or heeled boot. I also got some long-sleeved t-shirts there that were very long in the body and sleeve - I'm almost 8 months and still very covered up. Wherever you go, I think you just need to try on a ton - even within the same store there are so many different cuts. |

I had a lot of Liz Lange stuff that I bought in New York. I believe she closed her store there, but you can still get things online or at some boutiques.
I also was first pregnant in San Francisco and wore tons of Japanese Weekend - loved it all. |

Thanks everyone for the great tips!! I'm going to make a trip down to H&M this week to see what I can find.
If any of you 5'9 ladies want to sell your wardrobes let me know

| I'm 5'8" and found decent maternity pants at Gap. They were inexpensive, washable and had a belly panel and held their shape through multiple washings. They were also sized like normal pants. (i'm size 6.) I bought 2 pairs each in black and khaki. I also found a decent black pencil skirt there. For tops, I found some cute going-out tops at Old Navy, but had better luck w/ Japanese weekend tops for work. Found those on ebay. I didn't like the quality of the Liz Lange for target stuff I bought. |
