Tell me about Poolesville magnet

Anonymous
DD has a few years. We are “upcounty” not in a W school. DD is showing aptitude in Humanities. Poolesville magnet might be a possibility.

Anyone have experience? Culture? Are kids happy? Are kids part of the broader school community? Assuming good academics but - how does it compare to IB or lots of APs for college admissions? Tips for getting in?

This is helicoptering...but want my kid to have a better HS experience than I had and go to college of Choice...

Thanks in advance.

Poolesville is an excellent school. Downcounty elitists will say it’s not as good as Blair, but they’re wrong; both schools are great.

My daughter is interested, but I can’t see us moving into the catchment.

Isn’t everyone in the catchment for either Poolesville or Blair?

Poolesville outranks Blair and is the top school in the state of the MD.

MCPS doesn't really promote it in any PR way and the principal isn't a showboat like the one at Blair so you hear less about it which is fine.

We’re in Blair’s catchment, but Polesville’s program is slightly closer to her interests.

Np: you can't apply to poolesville from the DCC, correct?

No but DCC has its own magnets: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/specialprograms/

Poolesville has global ecology, which is what DD wants. Wish it could be replicated at Blair or another DCC HS.

My understanding is global ecology is open to the whole county.

Can you share a link? When we moved, we asked and were told no. It would be great if she can apply!

So definitely verify with Poolesville or MCPS itself, but it says here it’s county wide: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/specialprograms/high/magnet-ecology.aspx

Here's the link to last year's application that says it is a county-wide program.
