My 9 mo. seems to find all things metal to lick or put into her mouth. We move her from them immediately and try to keep it all away from her but she seems to gravitate towards them. She is teething so I'm assuming its because metal tends to be cooler that perhaps it feels good to her. But is there anything else that could be wrong? Could it be a sign of a deficiency or is this normal baby behavior? I BF until 7 mo. She is now on formula and eats solids like a champ. We have not introduced meats yet. Any thoughts or am I just channeling my motherly neurosis? Thank you for your thoughts.

My son did the same thing at that age. He was all over the stainless steel appliances! I too think it was a teething thing, but also about exploration. He stopped licking them after about a month. He was on formula starting at 3 months and we didn't introduce meat until he was 12 months. I hope that helps! |
Mine (10 months) also licks/gnaws on metal objects. As long as it's not an electrical outlet plate, I've stopped fighting it! I figure she'll get tired of it soon enough. |
My son did the same thing. He loved the dishwasher! He'd just stand there licking it.
He has grown out of it though, and we didn't introduce meat until a year. |
Thank you everyone for sharing your experience. Its helpful to hear it from other moms. |
Your kid is probably totally normal, but if you are concerned, ask your doctor about iron levels, pica, etc. |
I guess you could always get a sterling silver teething ring! |
The image of that is too funny! Haha thanks for a laugh |
I would be happy if my son licked metal objects. He is a little older and likes to stick his penis on smooth, cold, metal. |
I heard something about this and iron levels...i am sure it is nothing, but call the doc. |
