Wow. This article is tough to read but I think it’s very important.
This part in particular really struck me: “All of us were poor, none of us had any kinda fancy job. So what else could you be proud of? Well, I’m proud to be white. Then you get this idea that you’re fighting this big racial holy war, you’re somebody of importance, you’re a Grand Dragon. It was so much easier to believe in the conspiracies than just look at yourself in the mirror.” I have a lot of relatives and old classmates who could probably relate to this if they were being honest with themselves. It also struck me that he admits his online debates were partially trolling and partially learning. That’s something I will keep in mind in the future when I end up arguing with these people online. Their justification for thinking Adam and Eve were caucasian is insane. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/07/reform-white-supremacists-shane-johnson-life-after-hate/ |
Mother Jones. |
So? |
It’s American History X in real life. |
that was a freakin awesome movie, but scary, too. People who fall with groups like the KKK are no different than people who feel lost and want a sense of belonging so they join gangs or extremist Muslim groups. |
What strikes me about this story is how similar it is to the formation stories of terrorists and gang members.
All of them are in deprived conditions, and looking for something to give their lives meaning, purpose, and social status. |
We have heard many, many stories of terrorists who were NOT brought up in deprived conditions. In fact, many of them had quite a good life before becoming terrorists. |
Not very many. The guys carrying rifles and strapping C4 to their chests are not Bin Ladens. |
And there are many stories of white men who grew up in nice expensive suburban areas that grow up to be white racists, too. |
a few actually now work in the WH. |
True. The 9/11 terrorists were educated and from middle-class and upper-middle class families. |
That was a really worthwhile read. Thanks for posting it. |
So Keith, do you agree that Trump and McConnell and all other Republicans ought to full-throat reject this kind of scum? Why haven’t they done it? |
DP . They HAVE denounced it. Trump called white supremacists "repugnant" and specifically called out the KKK. And he's done so decades before he even ran for president. |
Really? Calling them “very fine people” doesn’t sound like denouncing them.
