What kinds of kids tend to choose Northwestern? What departments are the strongest? Who gets in?
|
| Like Chicago only 1/2 step behind. Excellent school if you can get in. |
|
Not like Chicago, but a great school in a different way. Well-rounded, happy kids, good preprofessional programs (BA/MD, journalism, engineering, education) and serious arts (theater, music school). Lots of interest in sports. Suburban location (think Bethesda) but with easy access to a fun city. Beach and ice skating on campus. Midwestern friendliness.
Crucial to apply ED. They want kids who are eager to be there. |
| Not comparable to U of C at all. Like PP said NU is a much more well rounded school. Great campus in great location. Kids love going there. Great education and fun too. Big 10 school so there is a lot of school spirit. U of C is not fun. |

NU tends to attract more of the conventional types. Really, really smart, obviously, but much less quirky and intellectual than the average UChicago kid. It’s a great, well-rounded school whose graduates go on to excellent graduate schools and jobs. Evanston is a very nice area, about 30 minutes to the city via the elevated train.
Source: I attended grad school there for audiology. And my child is 99.9% sure she is applying there ED. |

Northwestern is a popular choice for Jewish students from this area. https://forward.com/jewish-college-guide/northwestern-university/
Terrific J-school and grad schools. |
|
NU has a single digit admit rate although ED is still 26%.
They have a trimester calendar and most students do at least a double major. Expected my kid to love it but she did not. It was a little too Greek, a little too rah-rah for her. Which is fine because getting in is so hard if you are unhooked. |
+1 Conventional types. Good solid students. Smart, capable, achievement oriented. It does not attract the same kids as U of C who are more intellectually aggressive. |
| It’s unfair to compare Northwestern to University of Chicago. Very different levels locations in Chicago-land and very different schools. |
Friend had great stats - double alum - did not get in. [accepted at U VA, Michigan and other top schools] |
LOL. What is up with the Chicago nutter? Are you also the college nutter who posts on the Political forum at 1am on a Saturday night? If so, then it sounds like the social life at Chicago is a bit....lacking... |
| Fabulous school with well-rounded happy kids. Admits this year dropped to 9%.... |
Overall admit rate is 9%. But ED is ~25%. |
| Indeed. If one wants to go to NU, apply RD at your own peril. |
