Recurrent Pregnancy Loss and IVF success?

Anonymous
I'm very frustrated -- after dozens of tests to figure out the reason behind multiple m/c's, there's nothing really wrong with DH or me (ages 33 and 32), and I have no better plan than when I started this process. I've been to SG, which thinks IVF after PGD will be the best shot. But "best shot" still isn't a home run by any means, and I don't have to explain to the folks on this list why I feel some trepidation with starting IVF. Are there any success stories out there? I am ready to chin up for the next few years with the "guaranteed" success program if there's a reason for me to be hopeful.

How many m/c's have you had? If it has just been two (or even three) I am not sure I would resort to IVF just yet. Do you have trouble getting pregnant as well?

I know how frustrating this can be, as I have been through the same thing myself.

This is OP, to reply to PP, I get pregnant quick and easy, and then miscarry about 5-7 weeks along, 4 times in a row. SG says I'm in an outlier group of cases and among the toughest to treat, presumably b/c nobody really knows what exactly is being treated when you don't know what's going wrong to cause the RPL. I guess that's my bottom line question -- can IVF "treat" that group?

I assume SG has done the usual battery of tests to identify other problems. Chromosomal abnormalities are the number one cause of first trimester miscarriage. So while IVF itself will not cure this problem, IVF in combination with PGD (or whatever the new test is that is replacing PGD) is your best hope for identifying healthy embryos. Transfering only healthy embryos will up the odds that a subsequent pregnancy will stick. I would say you probably have pretty good odds based upon your age. After 3 years of trying and 3 chemical pregnancies via IFV, IVF with PGD worked for me.

Sorry if you have already been tested for this (as I have no knowledge of what fertility specialists test for), but have clotting disorders been considered? I recently discovered I have a clotting disorder than can cause multiple miscarriages. If I become pregnant I will have to be on blood thinners to help prevent miscarriage. Just a thought, and apologies if this is already covered in the battery of tests.

Did you try taking aspirn? I would try one more time on my own with some kind of blood thinner such as Heparin/lovenox. I don't know if you have been tested for antibodies or coagulation issues, but for what I've read on the board below, some women test negative to these problems but still take the drugs and have a good outcome.

Also OP, I would DEMAND a genetic test of the embryo remains, just to make sure it is a genetic/chromosomal problem - if it is not, I can't see how IVF can help you.

I love SGF and I am in forever debit with them, but we had a problem GETTING pregnant - that doesn't seem to be your case. I would look for a reputable OB or RE that would FIRST work with you on WHY you cannot keep the pregnancies - is it a genetic issue? a problem with the uterus? coagulation? antibodies?; would try putting you on drugs and then, if that didn't' work, go into the road of fertility treatment - either IVF or even surrogate (depending on the issue).

PP here - I am sorry if you already tried all that and I am just "assuming" you did not. But in case you didn't, just some food for thought.
