Has anyone moved their late birthday child over to the public schools in 2nd grade around the cutoff

Anonymous
I noticed the school cutoff info has dates posted for Pre-K, K, and 1st. Does this mean if your child already completed 1st grade but is young for his/her age the school takes them into 2nd grade? Has anyone done this before? I know at some point the school has to go by grade completed. My family moved from NY to NC and my October birthday sister went into the next grade and wasn't kept back because the cutoff was earlier in NC.

In FCPS, I know of people who have put their late birthday children (October, November) in private school for K and 1 and then moved over to public in second (or later).

We moved from DC to moco in 3rd gr & our child had a Sept. 30 birthday when cutoff for her peer group in K had been Sept. 1. School did not make a peep about it; they just placed her in the next grade.

Has anyone been able to get away with this in Montgomery County? I'm curious to hear if kids with, say, a November birthday have a chance.

I thought most states/school districts tend to have a policy that they will accept a child at their next stated grade level assuming they have had at least 2 years of public education.

I'm not sure if it is 2 years of school or having finished first grade. But after first grade, I think most schools accept a kid into the next grade regardless of their birthday.

I know of a DC charter that just accepted a turning 7 in October child who had completed first grade in DCPS. They would only place her in first grade again. This policy was applied without ever meeting the child, so totally based on birthdate and not related to any evaluation of his/her mastery of first grade material.

What is meant by "2 years of public education"? Does education in private schools count?

Yes, as long as it's K & above. What school districts want to avoid is parents insisting that a couple of years of nursery school (without any academic standards) means the child is ready for school at whatever level the parents desire - even if it's not at the school district's official cut-off. So they don't want your child with two years of in-home day-care nominally called "pre-school" at ages 2 and 3 being foisted on them as you insist "she's had two years of school - she's ready for Kindergarten."

crap - i didn't realize that our daughter would have to go to private first grade as well as kindergarden! that's really annoying. she's 3 weeks later than the cutoff for Fairfax schools, but she's big for her age, smart and very social. I was really hoping that we could switch her after kindergarden. I don't like the idea of her coming in and having to make all new friends when the other kids have been together for two years. (ok, and I don't like the idea of paying $15K for an additional year.)

PP is right. She can't switch over to FCPS until second grade. Sorry!

I'm the OP and I don't know if the two years of public schooling is correct or not but I do know that I recently found out that sometimes the schools try to not have everyone that was in together in K in the same class in 1st. I think part of it is so the kids don't form these cliques at a young age and are sort of in a situation where they have to mix and mingle with other kids.

I don't know about other counties, but MoCo will allow kids to test in to the next grade. I don't think you can be too much past the official cut off though-google Early Entrance to Kindergarten. There's also a process for early entrance to first grade but it's different than for early entrance to K.

Call your local FCPS and talk to the assistant principal- I got the message that I was ok til K in private.. (and then move to 1st grade)- October kid here too..

FCPS does not allow testing for early entrance. They do definitely switch kids around every year (given the constraints of the school's size) so that they are not all in the same classes together.
